Pétanque in Andorra

Andorra, one of Europe's smallest states, holds an outsized place in pétanque history: barely three years after its national federation was founded, the tiny Pyrenean principality hosted the sport's biggest stage, the FIPJP World Triplette Championship. The Federacio Andorrana de Petanca (FAP) governs the sport today, affiliated with both the Confederation Europeenne de Petanque (CEP) and the Federation Internationale de Petanque et Jeu Provencal (FIPJP).

History

Organized pétanque in Andorra traces to the 1980s, when clubs in the parishes of Sant Julia de Loria, Ordino, and Andorra la Vella came together to propose forming a national federation so Andorra could take part in world championship competition. The Federacio Andorrana de Petanca i Disciplines Associades (FAP) was formally created in 1988, with Antoni Calvet as its first president and Josep Maria Benazet as vice-president; the pair submitted the federation for registration in the country's official register of sports federations. A second board, elected the following year and led by Christian Trillas Villalongue, drove the federation's early growth.

That growth culminated remarkably quickly: in 1991, Andorra hosted the 27th FIPJP World Men's Triplette Championship in the parish of Escaldes-Engordany, drawing 28 national teams and 56 triplettes to Andorran soil. According to the federation's own account, the decision to award Andorra the championship was reached over a dinner in Ordino between FIPJP president Claude Azema, Escaldes' sports councillor Robert Font, and FAP president Christian Trillas, only around a year before the event itself. The Andorran government subsidized participating teams' accommodation to help the young federation, then barely three years old, pull off hosting duties for the sport's premier international event - a feat it has not repeated since.

Federation

The FAP is based at the Centre Tecnificacio Ordino, C/ Narciso Yepes s/n, AD300-Ordino, and is a member of both the CEP and FIPJP. Sourcing on who currently leads the federation is genuinely inconsistent across otherwise credible sources: the Comite Olimpic Andorra's own federation directory lists Bruno Samtmann Gabarron as president, Francisco Galera Zamora as vice-president, Cecilia Galvan as secretary, and Patrick Senzier Maslo as treasurer, with Philippe Santmann and Alexandre Giraud as vocals - yet Andorran public broadcaster RTVA introduced Patrick Senzier himself as the FAP's president in a 24 March 2026 interview, and other records have at various points named Josep Maria Cucalon Duran or Francisco Galera Zamora as president instead. This could reflect a leadership change the Olympic committee's directory has not caught up with, or simply inconsistent record-keeping across sources - we could not resolve which is current via WebSearch and WebFetch alone, so treat the presidency as unconfirmed pending a direct statement from the FAP itself.

Domestic Scene

Andorran pétanque was once played at up to eight affiliated clubs, but by 2026 the FAP counted just four active clubs: Club Petanca Ordino, Club Petanca Pas de la Casa, Club de Petanca d'Andorra la Vella, and Club Petanca d'Escaldes-Engordany. Four other clubs that once carried the sport in their parishes - Club Petanca La Bola d'Encamp, Club Petanca Sant Julia de Loria, Club Petanca La Massana, and Club Petanca d'Enclar - are no longer listed among the federation's active membership.

Club Petanca Ordino (CP Ordino), one of the federation's founding clubs, remains active today under president Jean-Michel Armengol, playing behind the parish schools and opposite the Casa Pairal. The club organizes doublette and triplette tournaments through the FAP's competition calendar.

Club Petanca Pas de la Casa, based at Hotel Les Truites, Carrer dels Pareatges 8, in the AD200 parish of Encamp, was founded in 1990 and claims one of the sport's more unusual home courts: an indoor terrain more than 2,400 meters above sea level, needed because of Pas de la Casa's high-altitude ski-resort climate. The club, presided over by Bruno Santmann, won the 2024 edition of the Canolich championship, an annual open-air tournament held each spring at the Canolich area of Sant Julia de Loria parish.

Club de Petanca d'Andorra la Vella plays at the Pistes del Santa Coloma courts, and Club Petanca d'Escaldes-Engordany plays at the Pistes del Prat Gran, both in their respective capital-area parishes.

Outside the FAP's four registered clubs, a local Grup de Petanca Lauredia remains active in Sant Julia de Loria: in 2023 the parish comu remodeled the Prat del Senzill park and gave the group dedicated courts there, which now serve as its base for training sessions and an annual tournament held during the parish's Festa Major each July.

National Competition Calendar

The FAP crowns its three national titles across a single championship weekend each spring: the 2026 Campionat Nacional was held 2-4 May at the L'Aldosa courts, opening with the Triplet Mixte on Friday 2 May (won by Sara Genevieve, Sebastien Raynaud, and Guillaume Denis), followed by the Doblet on Saturday 3 May (Phillippe Santmann and Sebastien Raynaud) and the Triplet on Sunday 4 May (Jon Fortes, Bruno Santmann, and Alexander Bressy). Beyond the national championship weekend, the FAP's club-organized calendar includes recurring Triplet a la Mêlée, Doblet a la Mêlée, and Doblet Formades open tournaments hosted in rotation by Club Petanca d'Escaldes-Engordany, Club Petanca d'Ordino, and Club Petanca de Sant Julia de Loria.

International Results

Beyond hosting the 1991 World Championship, Andorra has fielded individual competitors in pétanque at the Mediterranean Games, a multi-sport event that includes boules disciplines (lyonnaise, petanque, and raffa) alongside Olympic sports. At the 2022 Mediterranean Games in Oran, Algeria, held at the Es Senia LOFA Complex from 26-29 June 2022, Jon Fortes Porres represented Andorra in the men's petanque precision-throwing event but was eliminated in the preliminary rounds, while a second entrant, Frederic Breton Martin, did not start. Andorra returned to the Mediterranean Games at the 2026 edition in Taranto, Italy, where Jon Fortes and Bruno Samtmann competed as a doublette on 23 August 2026 at the Montemesola Sport Hall, losing 13-0 to Tunisia and 13-2 to Portugal to close out the competition without a win.

Ahead of Taranto, the same pairing added Alexandre Bressy to form a triplette and traveled to Montpellier's Sud Arena for the inaugural Odyssée des Nations (16-17 August 2026), an international club-style tournament drawing teams from across Europe. After finishing 56th of the field through five Swiss-system rounds, the Andorran trio qualified into the secondary Concurs C knockout bracket, where they beat Poland 13-9, Austria 13-8, and Germany 13-4 to reach the final before losing a close 11-10 decision to Denmark.
