Belgium holds a prestigious position in the world of pétanque, not just as a powerhouse on the terrain, but as a founding architect of the modern game. Early History

Pétanque took root in Belgium in 1949 in Verviers, where the country's first club, A.B.F., was formed and remains active today. A national federation followed in 1954, its founding core based in Spa before expanding into the Liège and Brussels regions - the same Spa connection that would soon put Belgium at the center of the sport's international story.

A Founding Father of Pétanque

Belgium's influence on the sport is profound. In 1957, representatives from six nations - Belgium, France, Monaco, Morocco, Switzerland, and Tunisia - met in the Belgian town of Spa to discuss the formation of an international governing body. This historic meeting paved the way for the official establishment of the Fédération Internationale de Pétanque et Jeu Provençal (FIPJP) in Marseille on 8 March 1958, with Spain joining the six founding nations to make seven.

Fittingly, the town of Spa also hosted the very first Pétanque World Championship in 1959, cementing Belgium's place in the sport's history books.

Bilingual Structure

Reflecting Belgium's unique regional structure, the sport is organized under the umbrella of the Fédération Belge de Pétanque / Belgische Petanque Federatie, based in Herstal near Liège. This national body coordinates with two primary regional organizations:

• Fédération Belge Francophone de Pétanque (FBFP): Oversees the sport in Brussels and Wallonia.
• Petanque Federatie Vlaanderen (PFV): Manages activities and leagues in Flanders.

Belgium's competition calendar is dense, featuring national championships across all categories (Triples, Doubles, Singles, Veterans, and Youth).

• Championnat de Belgique: The premier national competition. The FBFP's 2026 Federal Doubles Championship (men and women) was held 2-3 May in Rochefort.

On the international stage, Belgium is a consistent medal contender. The Belgian national team is frequently ranked among the top nations in Europe and the world, known for their tactical discipline and technical excellence.

Belgium has produced some of the finest players to ever throw a boule.

• Claudy Weibel: A true legend of the sport, Weibel won the World Triplette title in 2000 (with André Lozano, Jean-François Hémon, and Michel Van Campenhout) before becoming pétanque's first-ever World Tête-à-tête (Singles) Champion in 2015, beating Tunisia's Sami Atallah 13-8 in the final in Nice. He is widely considered one of the most complete players in history.
• Joel Marchandise: A cornerstone of the Belgian national team for years, contributing to multiple international podiums.
• Logan Baton: A five-time Belgian champion and European precision-shooting vice-champion, Baton is one of the brightest stars of the new generation, representing the future of Belgian pétanque.
