Pétanque in Gabon

Pétanque in Gabon is a small but developing scene, anchored by an international-standard boulodrome inaugurated in the capital, Libreville, in 2022. Gabon's federation has also been active regionally, joining a 2019 breakaway movement that split the continent's governing body for boules sports.

History

Pétanque in Gabon is governed by the Fédération Gabonaise de Pétanque, led by president Guillaume Nguessan Mbadinga. We could not independently verify an official federation website. In May 2019, Gabon was one of around 15 African national federations, alongside Côte d'Ivoire, Morocco, Burkina Faso, Madagascar, Mauritius, Comoros, Seychelles, Senegal, Algeria, Mauritania, Mali, and Niger, that broke away to form a rival continental body over disagreements with the leadership of the Confédération Africaine des Sports Boules (CASB), the FIPJP-recognized African confederation historically led by Beninese official Idrissou Ibrahima. That confederation has itself been in institutional dispute since January 2024, when member federations meeting in Dakar, Senegal voted to rename it from CASB to the Confédération Africaine de Sport Pétanque (CASP) and elected Senegalese official Brahim Derwiche as president; a May 21, 2026 Court of Arbitration for Sport ruling annulled the FIPJP's withdrawal of recognition from the original CASB leadership, and on May 23, 2026, a separate CASP assembly in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire elected former Moroccan federation president Mahmoud Archane as its new president, succeeding Derwiche. Whether Gabon's federation currently sits with CASB or CASP, or how the dispute has affected Gabon's own continental standing, could not be independently confirmed via available sources.

The Henri Salvador Boulodrome

Gabonese pétanque received a significant boost on 27 May 2022, when the Boulodrome Tropicana "Henri Salvador" was inaugurated at the Tropicana complex in Libreville. Described in local press as an international-standard pétanque venue, the boulodrome was opened in the presence of Gabon's Minister of Tourism, Jean Norbert Diramba, who represented the government after Minister of Youth and Sports Franck Nguema was unable to attend, along with the ambassadors of France and Spain to Gabon. Federation president Guillaume Nguessan Mbadinga spoke at the ceremony, inviting as many people as possible to take up the sport and stressing pétanque's value beyond competition, framing the new venue as a vehicle for growing the sport domestically and promoting Gabon as a destination.

The Gabonese Pétanque Scene

Gabonese media covering the Henri Salvador boulodrome's opening described pétanque as a sport that remains relatively unknown in the country outside its core community of licensed players, with the new venue intended to give both enthusiasts and newcomers an additional place to play and to help the federation expand participation over time. A sports-club directory listing for Libreville names PADBOL GABON as an active pétanque club in the capital, though we could not independently verify its founding date, membership size, or home venue. We could not verify a broader club count, national-team results, or national-championship records for Gabon from available sources - a search of the field lists for the 10th African Championship (Nouakchott, Mauritania, 22-28 November 2025), which drew 18 national delegations, did not turn up a Gabonese team - and this profile will be expanded as more information becomes available.
