Pétanque in Japan

Pétanque in Japan is organized under the Japan Pétanque and Boules Federation (JPBF), a public interest incorporated association (公益社団法人日本ペタンク・ブール連盟) that has grown a national competition structure spanning nearly all of the country's 47 prefectures since the early 1980s.

History

The sport's national governing body traces back to the Japan Pétanque Association, founded in 1983. It was later registered as a specified nonprofit corporation before reorganizing in 2011 into the general incorporated association Japan Pétanque Boules Association. In March 2014, that body merged with the general incorporated foundation Japan Pétanque Boules Union to form the current public interest incorporated association Japan Pétanque and Boules Federation (JPBF). The federation is an approved organization of the Japan Olympic Committee (JOC), an ordinary member of the FIPJP, and, since June 2015, an affiliated central competitive sports body of the Japan Sports Association.

Japan was also a founding member nation of the Asian Pétanque and Sports Boules Confederation (APSBC), established in 1997 alongside Cambodia, Israel, Laos, Malaysia, Mauritius, Seychelles, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Structure & Regional Strongholds

The JPBF organizes the country into 9 regional blocks, under which prefectural federations and associations are established in nearly all 47 prefectures, from Hokkaido in the north to Okinawa in the south. Tokyo hosts one of the most active scenes: the Tokyo Pétanque Boules Federation counted 107 members across 7 affiliated clubs (Mon Soleil, Minato, Chuo, Aoyama, Fukagawa, Tachikawa, and Setagaya) as of April 2025, organized into an internal club league with each club fielding its own roster. Other well-established prefectural bodies include the federations of Kanagawa, Saitama, Aichi, Okayama, Wakayama, Akita, and Tochigi.

Major Tournaments

• Japan Championship (日本選手権大会): The JPBF's national championship, held annually and open to teams representing each region; the 40th edition took place 15-16 November 2025 in Matsubara City, Osaka Prefecture, at the Matsubara Citizens' Sports Ground, following the 39th edition on 5-6 October 2024 in Akita City at the Katsuhira Citizens' Ground.
• East Japan Championship (東日本ペタンク選手権): A regional championship for eastern prefectures, tracked in the Kanagawa federation's competition archives.
• West Japan Championship (西日本ペタンク選手権大会): The counterpart regional championship for western Japan, organized by prefectural federations including Wakayama; the 23rd edition has been documented in official tournament materials.

Clubs & Hotspots

Aoyama Pétanque, one of Tokyo's most visible clubs, plays every Saturday afternoon at Aoyama Park in Minato-ku, near Nogizaka Station on the Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line, and is one of the seven clubs affiliated with the Tokyo Pétanque Boules Federation. In central Japan, the Aichi Prefecture Pétanque Federation organizes regular monthly meets around Chiryu and supports the sport's growth in the greater Nagoya area, including at senior community centers where pétanque is a popular recreational activity.

National Team: Ayumi Goma

Aoyama Pétanque's Ayumi Goma is Japan's most decorated recent pétanque competitor. She won bronze in women's singles at the 2016 Asian Beach Games in Danang, Vietnam - Japan's only pétanque medal at those Games - and has since represented the country at further international competitions, including the 2023 Women's and Junior World Championships in Bangkok, Thailand. At the national team's pointing and shooting selection trials, held over two days in Chiryu, Aichi Prefecture in March 2026, Goma placed first in both disciplines for a fifth consecutive selection, again earning a place on Japan's squad for that year's international tournaments.
