Pétanque in Liechtenstein

Liechtenstein has no FIPJP-affiliated federation, but a small club, Petanque Club Liechtenstein in Schaan, ran a recreational scene from 2014 to at least 2024 before going offline.

Pétanque in Liechtenstein

Liechtenstein has no national pétanque federation recognized by the FIPJP; the confederation's own per-nation record probe for Liechtenstein (which does exist for many other small countries) returns no result, and the country does not appear in the federation or club directories on petanque-world.com. What we did find is a small, privately organized recreational club, Petanque Club Liechtenstein, based in the municipality of Schaan, which ran an active and well-documented amateur scene for at least a decade before its public presence went quiet.

Petanque Club Liechtenstein

The club is a formally registered Swiss/Liechtenstein-style association (Verein) with its own statutes, available (as of archived snapshots) for download from its own website. Its photo galleries trace its origin to a founders' trip to France - a gallery titled "Von der Reise zur Idee" ("From the Trip to the Idea") is filled entirely with photographs from France - and the club's earliest documented event is its first Nikolausturnier (St. Nicholas tournament), held in 2014, suggesting the club was founded in or shortly before that year.

As of its most recently archived leadership listing, the club's board was:

  • Andreas Kantor - President
  • Marion Erne - Vice President and secretary (Aktuarin)
  • Thomas Dürr - Treasurer (Kassier)

The club's registered correspondence address was c/o Andreas Kantor, Im Rösle 12, 9494 Schaan.

Training and Where Members Played

During the club's official season (from the spring clock change to the autumn clock change), members trained weekly on Wednesdays from 6:00 PM, normally on their own sand court (Sandplatz) near the Grossabündt in the municipality of Gamprin. Outside the official season, members met more informally, weather permitting, at Steg, a mountain village in Liechtenstein's Alpine interior. The club's photo galleries also document a 2015 visit to the Boulodrome in St. Gallen, Switzerland, and a 2015 "Alpen-Pétanque" outing playing the game in the Alps, alongside winter training sessions.

Not Affiliated with Any Federation

Petanque Club Liechtenstein does not appear to be affiliated with the FIPJP, with the Asian, European, or any other continental pétanque confederation, or with SAP (Schweizerische Amateur Pétanque / the Swiss Pétanque Federation's German-Switzerland regional association), whose own published roster of 21 member clubs - all located in Swiss cantons - does not include any Liechtenstein club, despite Liechtenstein's German-speaking population and its geographic position wedged between Switzerland and Austria, and despite some other Liechtenstein sports bodies choosing to affiliate with Swiss national federations given the country's small size. The club appears to have operated purely as an independent, self-organized recreational association.

Current Status: Uncertain

The club's own website, petanque.li, could not be reached at all during this research (the domain fails to resolve - a DNS check finds no A/AAAA record, only the zone's SOA/NS records via ns1.netzone.ch). The most recent snapshot found via the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine now dates to 14 August 2024 (an earlier audit of this page cited a last snapshot of 27 March 2023; a later check of the Wayback Machine's availability index found a further, more recent capture). That August 2024 snapshot was served over plain http:// rather than the https:// used by the March 2023 snapshot, consistent with a lapsed TLS certificate rather than a site that was already gone by then; its page content could not be re-read to confirm whether the site-wide "Training 2020" notice (stale since at least 2020, per an earlier audit) was still showing. Despite the web server being unreachable today, the domain's mail routing (MX records at mx.netzone.ch and mx2.netzone.ch) is still configured, suggesting the registration itself has not been abandoned even though the public website has gone offline. No mentions of the club in Liechtensteiner Vaterland, Volksblatt, or elsewhere were found for 2023-2026, and no other boules or pétanque club under any name was found in Liechtenstein's sports federation directories. Whether the club is still meeting informally, has gone dormant, or has dissolved entirely could not be determined from available sources. We will update this page if a current federation, club, or competition record for Liechtenstein becomes verifiable.
