Pétanque in the Republic of Congo

Pétanque in the Republic of Congo, known internationally as Congo-Brazzaville to distinguish it from its larger neighbor, is organized under a national federation whose teams compete as the Diables Rouges (Red Devils) - the same nickname carried by the country's football side. The sport has produced continental medals on both home and away soil, and Brazzaville itself has hosted a major multi-sport pétanque competition.

Federation and Domestic Structure

The Fédération Congolaise du Sport Boules (Fecoboules) governs pétanque nationally and is affiliated with the African Confederation of Ball Sports (CASB/CASP) under the FIPJP. Fecoboules organizes six regional leagues - Brazzaville, Pointe-Noire, Niari, Bouenza, Pool, and Sangha - overseeing dozens of affiliated clubs. Its flagship domestic event is the combined National Championship and Coupe du Congo, held annually at the Boulevard Alfred Raoul boulodrome in Brazzaville. The confederation's CASB/CASP dual naming reflects an unresolved institutional dispute: member federations voted in January 2024 to rename the body from the Confédération Africaine des Sports Boules (CASB) to the Confédération Africaine de Sport Pétanque (CASP), but a May 21, 2026 Court of Arbitration for Sport ruling restored recognition to the original CASB leadership, even as a rival CASP leadership was elected days later - leaving the confederation's structure contested as of mid-2026.

At the 2022-2023 edition, held 24-27 August 2023, the AIDEC club of Brazzaville won the National Championship title, beating fellow Brazzaville club ABC 13-4 in the final. In the separately-contested Coupe du Congo, ABC turned the tables to edge Pointe-Noire's ATT club 13-12. In precision shooting, Jean-Claude Mandozi took the individual title, defeating Frétas Maboundou of the DRP club 30-21.

Hosting the 2015 African Games

Congo's highest-profile moment on the pétanque calendar came when Brazzaville hosted the 11th African Games in September 2015, with pétanque contested at Kintélé from 5-9 September. Competing in front of a home crowd, Congolese shooter Chabrol Binguila won the silver medal in precision shooting, giving the host nation's Diables Rouges a highlight result at their own Games.

Continental and World Championship Results

Congo reached the World Championship's knockout rounds at the 2016 edition in Antananarivo, Madagascar, defeating the Netherlands 13-5 before being eliminated by eventual runner-up Belgium, 13-10.

At the 9th African Championship, held 6-9 June 2024 in Marrakech, Morocco, the Diables Rouges finished 6th in the main triples ranking - enough to qualify for the 2024 World Championship final phase in France - while also winning the tournament's secondary Coupe des Nations. Congo beat Morocco in the quarterfinal and Mauritania in the semifinal before defeating Niger 13-8 in the final to claim the Nations Cup title.

The Congolese Pétanque Scene

Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire remain the country's two main pétanque hubs, home to its most prominent clubs - AIDEC, ABC, ATT, and DRP among them - while Fecoboules' six regional leagues extend organized competition into the Niari, Bouenza, Pool, and Sangha departments. Between hosting a continental multi-sport Games, reaching World Championship knockout rounds, and lifting an African Nations Cup, the Diables Rouges have built one of francophone Central Africa's more active competitive pétanque programs.
