Pétanque in Romania

Pétanque in Romania has two distinct chapters that do not fully connect in the available sources: a grassroots federation founded in Bucharest in 2006 that spread the game to parks and towns across the country through word of mouth, and a newly FIPJP-affiliated national body, created in 2025, the same year the Romanian government formally recognized pétanque as an officially practiced sport.

Origins: a Brussels businessman and a Bucharest park, 2006

Pétanque was introduced to Romania around 2006 by Titus Marin, a businessman born in Warsaw and based in Brussels, who established what contemporary press coverage calls the Romanian Petanque Federation (registered separately as the Asociatia de Petanque din Romania, based at Str. Stirbei Voda 4, Bucuresti). Its earliest documented activity was a friendly match against French pétanque enthusiasts in Bucharest's Gradina Icoanei park in August 2006, followed by an internal tournament awarding medals the following month. A 2012 newspaper profile described the organization as a small, largely volunteer operation, with its phone line run by sports journalist Romeo Chiriac and his wife Liliana; plans to build an official court in Herastrau Park were reported as never having materialized. From this Bucharest base, players carried the game on informal demonstration trips to Sebes, Alba Iulia, Cluj, Braila, and Galati, and organized activity was also reported reaching the spa towns of Buzias and Ocna Sibiului, both of which built courts to what was described at the time as Western standards. One notable early player was Victor Yila, a Congolese-born actor and French teacher living in Romania, whose brother Jean-Paul competed among Congo's top ten pétanque players and won tournaments in Marseille - a detail that captures how much of the sport's early growth in Romania ran through individual enthusiasts rather than formal institutions. The federation's own website, petanqueromania.ro, no longer resolves, and no evidence of continued activity by this specific organization was found beyond the mid-2010s.

Official recognition and FIPJP affiliation, 2025

Romania's National Sports Agency (Agenția Națională pentru Sport, ANS) issued Order No. 635/2025 on 22 July 2025, published in the Official Monitor of Romania (Part I, Issue 740) on 7 August 2025, formally recognizing "the practice in Romania of the sport branch 'Petanque'" - a legal prerequisite in Romania for a sport to be organized under the national sports framework.

Correction (2026-10-07): an earlier version of this profile attributed Order No. 635/2025 to "Romania's sports authorities... through the General Sports Directorate." County-sports-directorate sources show the order was actually issued by the National Sports Agency's president; the "General Sports Directorate" language describes the internal ANS department that circulated the order afterward, not the issuing authority itself. A companion order (No. 636/2025), signed the same day, separately recognized "Polo Ecvestru" (equestrian polo) as a new Romanian sport branch. The same year, a new national body, the Romanian Petanque Bowls Association (Roumanie Petanque Boules Association, logo-registered as Asociatia Boule et Petanque Romania), was created and became a member of the FIPJP, per the federation's own published nation record. It is led by president Jean-Michel Invernizzi, with its registered office at Bd Dacia nr. 77, Sector 3, Bucuresti, and a correspondence address at Calea Calarasi nr. 156, Bl. 53, Ap. 28, Sect. 3, Bucuresti. It is unclear from available sources whether this 2025 association has any organizational continuity with the 2006 federation described above, or represents a fully separate, newer effort - both accounts are presented here rather than asserting a link that cannot be confirmed. No Romanian team appearance at a FIPJP World Championship, European Championship, or Asian/regional confederation event was found in available results archives as of this writing, consistent with the national federation's very recent (2025) international affiliation.

International Debut: a Women's Team at the 2026 European Championships

In October 2026, Romania fielded a women's national team for the first time at a CEP (Confédération Européenne de Pétanque) event: the 12th European Women's Triples and Precision Shooting Championships, held 8-11 October 2026 in Loutraki, Greece, with 32 member federations registered. The Romanian squad - Marcella Roșu, Gabriela Bergé Montamat, Anka Corlățan, and Cristina Spătaru - was coached by French international player Tanguy Penin, the same freestyle pétanque influencer announced as an attendee at the Bucharest International Petanque Tournament described below. Bergé Montamat placed 12th of 32 entrants in the individual precision-shooting event. In the triples Nations Cup, Romania defeated Lithuania to reach the round of 16 before being eliminated by Finland. Romanian press coverage of the debut quoted Christian Le Maître, described as president of the "Asociația de Boule și Pétanque," while the delegation itself was led by Frédéric Cranet-Pontois, described as the association's vice president.

Flag for follow-up (2026-10-27): this is the first source found naming Christian Le Maître as president of a Romanian national pétanque body, and it does not match Jean-Michel Invernizzi, the president named in the FIPJP's own nation record for the Romanian Petanque Bowls Association (the source for the Federation Contact section below). Both sources describe what appears to be the same FIPJP-recognized Romanian body - no second FIPJP-affiliated organization was found in this cycle's research - so this is presented as an open discrepancy rather than resolved either way: either the FIPJP record (created 2025) is now out of date on leadership, or "president" is being used loosely by Romanian press for a different role. This needs direct confirmation from the association or an updated FIPJP record before the Federation Contact section is corrected either way.

Federation Contact

The Romanian Petanque Bowls Association (Roumanie Pétanque Boules Association) is reachable through its FIPJP-listed details: email roumanie@fipjp.com and romania@fipjp.com, and telephone +40 784 994 771 (a genuine Romanian mobile number, unlike the mismatched country-code phone entries found on some other national profiles). Its registered office is at Bd Dacia nr. 77, Sector 3, Bucuresti, with correspondence directed to Calea Calarasi nr. 156, Bl. 53, Ap. 28, Sect. 3, Bucuresti. President Jean-Michel Invernizzi leads the association, per its own FIPJP nation record (created and FIPJP-affiliated in 2025). No separate office phone line or public office hours were found beyond the number listed above.

Clubs and Where to Play

The most visible currently active club is Club Sportiv Petanque Bucuresti (CSPB), a nonprofit sports association pursuing educational, sporting, cultural, and social goals through pétanque in Bucharest, open to "mixed players of all conditions and nationalities, from 10 to 80 years old." CSPB organizes recreational sessions, coaching, and tournaments, and participates in Romania's Formularul 230 tax-redirection program, through which Romanian taxpayers can direct a share of their income tax to registered nonprofits. Beyond Bucharest, informal or historical pétanque activity has been documented in Cluj, Galati, Curtea de Arges, and the spa towns of Buzias and Ocna Sibiului, though current, up-to-date club directories for those locations were not available at fetch time.

National Competition Calendar

Romania does not yet have a national championship series comparable to those run by FIPJP's more established member federations, but CSPB has built the country's one recurring dated competitive fixture:

  • Bucharest International Petanque Tournament (BIPT) - CSPB's flagship event. The inaugural edition, BIPT 2025, ran 25-27 April 2025 at the Romaero site in Bucharest, a different venue from the 2026 edition's Complexul Silva. Pre-event coverage from Le Petit Journal Bucarest and the French pétanque news site Boulistenaute both confirm the same dates and venue, and describe the field as a mix of amateur and high-level international teams from France, Monaco, Great Britain, Israel, Bulgaria, Greece, Slovakia, and Turkey alongside local Romanian players, with freestyle pétanque influencer Tanguy Penin announced to attend throughout. Press contact for the 2025 edition was Jean-Michel Invernizzi, the same individual who leads the Romanian Petanque Bowls Association described above, tying the tournament directly to that federation. Final standings or results from the 2025 edition were not found in available sources. BIPT 2026 was scheduled for 25-27 September 2026 at Complexul Silva, a different venue from the 2025 edition, opening with a doubles competition on 25 September followed by triples on 26-27 September, both in Swiss-system format. Entry was open to licensed and non-licensed players alike, with a EUR 20 entry fee per player per event and a combined prize pool of EUR 4,000 in cash and gifts across both competitions. CSPB's own pre-event announcement described the 2026 edition as a return "after a successful first edition," which BIPT 2025's confirmed dates and venue corroborate, and listed Tanguy Penin among confirmed attendees. As of this writing (7 October 2026, roughly two weeks after the event's scheduled dates), no results, recap, or other confirmation that the tournament took place as planned has turned up in available sources - a gap a future cycle should try to close. Update (2026-10-27): a fresh search for Romanian-language coverage of a Complexul Silva pétanque tournament in 2026 still turned up nothing beyond unrelated Bucharest sporting events - the gap remains open for a future cycle to close once (or if) results surface.
