Pétanque in Spain

Pétanque, known locally as petanca, has a long history in Spain and holds a distinctive honor in the sport's international story: Spain is one of the seven founding member nations of the Fédération Internationale de Pétanque et Jeu Provençal (FIPJP), formed in Marseille on 8 March 1958. Belgium, France, Monaco, Morocco, Switzerland, and Tunisia had laid the groundwork a year earlier at a 1957 tournament in Spa, Belgium; Spain joined them in Marseille, bringing the founding count to seven.

History

The game arrived on Spain's Mediterranean coast in the 1950s, carried by French tourists, seasonal workers, and returning emigrants who had picked it up across the border. Catalonia was an early center: Club Petanca Barcelona, founded in 1954, is regarded as the sport's pioneering Spanish club, and pétanque was organized there from 1958 as a section of the Catalan bowls federation before the Federació Catalana de Petanca became its own body in 1985.

Nationally, organized play grew steadily in the decades after Spain's 1958 FIPJP founding membership - federated players rose from roughly 275 in the 1950s to nearly 20,000 by 1981 - but the modern Federación Española de Petanca (FEP) was not formally constituted and recognized by Spain's Consejo Superior de Deportes (CSD) until the 1980s: a constitution project backed by 255 clubs was presented in January 1983, and the federation held its founding assembly in 1985. FEP is headquartered in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region.

Regional Strongholds

Pétanque in Spain is strongest along the Mediterranean coast and in the country's most populous regions. Per CSD federated-license data, Catalonia, Andalusia, and Madrid are Spain's three largest petanca communities by licensed players, with the Comunidad Valenciana close behind in fourth place. The Balearic Islands, Región de Murcia, and Galicia are also active centers, with the Mediterranean coast's warm climate and cultural proximity to southern France helping the sport take root early. As of the CSD's most recent published count (2023), Spain has 11,684 federated petanca licenses (about 9,400 men and 2,300 women), while FEP estimates more than 200,000 people play recreationally outside the federated system.

Major Tournaments

• Campeonato de España: The national championship, contested annually across individual, doubles (dobles), and triples (triples) categories for men's, women's, and junior divisions.
• Liga Nacional de Clubes: The national club league, with six-team Honor Divisions for men and women, historically hosted at venues like the Parque de Foietes in Benidorm, that crown Spain's top domestic club side each season.

Regional federations also run their own annual championships and international opens that feed players into the national calendar. Spain's international standing was underlined in 1989, when Catalonia hosted the FIPJP World Championship in Pineda de Mar.

National Competition Calendar

FEP's 2026 Campeonato de España season runs from spring through late summer, moving between the sport's Alicante-Murcia stronghold and the Canary Islands:

• 24-26 April - Campeonato de España Individual (men's 1st and 2nd category, women's, and youth divisions), Benejúzar, Alicante province
• 15-17 May - Campeonato de España de Dupletas Femeninas y Juveniles, Murcia
• 4-6 September - Campeonato de España de Tripletas de 1ª División Masculina y Femenina (also known as the Copa del Rey and Copa de la Reina de Petanca), Guatiza, Teguise, Lanzarote
• 25-27 September - Campeonato de España de Dupletas 1ª y 2ª Masculinas, Almoradí, Alicante province

Regional federations also run qualifying rounds and their own championships in the months beforehand to select each community's representatives for these national finals.

Notable Players

Spanish players have reached the podium at FIPJP World and European Championships:

• Jesús Escacho (Escacho Alarcón), born in Zaragoza and playing out of Club Petanca La Salceda in Las Torres de Cotillas (Murcia), has won the men's singles World Championship (Denmark, 2022) plus World and European precision-shooting titles, and was recognized with Spain's sporting merit medal for his achievements.
• Manuel Higinio Romero ("Pirolo"), of Elche/Elda and Vergel Petanca Club, claimed the European Precision Shooting Championship title in Albertville, France in 2023 - defeating Italy's Diego Rizzi in the semifinal - and has represented Spain as national-team captain across six World Championships.

FIPJP and International Standing

As a founding FIPJP member, Spain participates in World Championships, European Championships (via the CEP), and international opens, with Spanish clubs and federations also maintaining close ties to the French pétanque community across the border.

Clubs & Where to Play

Spain's clubs are spread across the same coastal and central strongholds as its licensed-player base. In Catalonia, Club Petanca Barcelona (founded 1954 in the Barceloneta district) remains the country's pioneering club, alongside Club Petanca Sants, also in Barcelona. Madrid's federated scene includes Club Petanca Fuenlabrada - based in the same city as FEP's national headquarters - plus Club Petanca Alcobendas, Club Petanca Canillejas, and Club Petanca Leganés. In Andalusia, Club de Campo de Sevilla has run a dedicated petanca delegation since the club's founding in 1973 and has held the Federación Española de Petanca's Honor Plaque for Best Club in Spain since 1990. The Valencian Community is anchored by Club Petanca Ciutat de València in the regional capital and Vergel Petanca Club on the Costa Blanca, while Murcia's Club Petanca La Salceda, in Las Torres de Cotillas, is home club to World Champion Jesús Escacho. The Balearic Islands field dozens of clubs affiliated with the Federación Balear de Petanca, based in Palma de Mallorca.
