Pétanque in Benin

Benin is one of West Africa's fastest-rising pétanque nations, a country that went from World Championship runner-up in 2016 to World Champion in 2023 - on home soil, no less - when it hosted the sport's biggest event in Cotonou. Nicknamed the "Écureuils Boulistes" (Boules Squirrels), the national team has built a decade-long run of African and world-stage results.

History

The Fédération Béninoise de Pétanque (FBP), headquartered in Cotonou, was founded in 2004 and became a full FIPJP member the same year. Its longtime president, Yaya Garba, handed over leadership at an elective general assembly held in the prefecture conference room of Dassa-Zoumè on 24 January 2026, where club delegates chose Salim Bio Nigan - the federation's outgoing general treasurer and a former president of the Ouémé-Plateau regional league - with 151 of 211 votes cast, against 62 for rival candidate Richard Allossohoun. Bio Nigan formally took office on 1 March 2026 for a 2026-2030 term, describing his governance project around three pillars: consolidating the federation's existing gains, structuring the discipline sustainably, and developing it further at national and international level. The transition was reported independently by multiple Beninese outlets, including Benin-Sports, La Nouvelle Tribune, La Nation Bénin, and L'Événement Précis.

That FIPJP listing still names outgoing president Yaya Garba and his personal contact details as of this writing, which predates the January 2026 leadership change to Salim Bio Nigan described above - we could not confirm whether the federation has since updated its FIPJP-filed contact record to reflect the new president.

World Championship Success

Benin's first appearance on a World Championship podium came at the 47th Men's Triples World Championship in Antananarivo, Madagascar (1-4 December 2016), where the "Écureuils Boulistes" squad of Marcel Bio, Ligalli Latédjou, Ronald Bottré, and Régis Simba upset France in the semi-final before losing the final 13-5 to host nation Madagascar - the country's first-ever World Championship podium finish.

Benin's breakthrough came seven years later when it hosted the 50th World Pétanque Championships in Cotonou (8-17 September 2023), staged at the city's Amazone esplanade. On home soil, Marcel Gbétablé and Laïma Sambo won Benin's first-ever World Championship gold medal, beating France's Audrey Bandiera and Dylan Rocher 13-8 in the Mixed Doubles final on 17 September 2023. The same championships saw Tunisia's Mouna Béji win the Individual World Championship title.

Gbétablé added another milestone at the 2025 World Games in Chengdu, China (14-17 August 2025), winning Men's Precision Shooting gold with a 29-25 final win over Italy's Andrea Chiapello - Benin's first-ever medal of any color at a World Games, in any sport. African Championships

At the 9th African Championship in Marrakech, Morocco (6-9 June 2024), Benin's men's triplette of Roland Fagbohoun, captain Marcel Bio, and Marcel Gbétaglé beat Congo 13-0 in the quarter-final before losing 13-1 to eventual champions Senegal in the semi-final, taking bronze.

Benin returned to the continental stage at the 10th African Championship in Nouakchott, Mauritania (22-28 November 2025), where it was among thirteen African nations to qualify for the 2026 Men's Triples World Championship - originally set for Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, but relocated to Khon Kaen, Thailand after Malaysia's hosting bid fell through - finishing second in the qualifying standings behind Madagascar. At the West African sub-regional Zone II Championship in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire (21-24 May 2026), Benin's men's triplette of Roland Fagbohoun, Vivian Zinvidjo, Emmanuel Agonkan, and Amir Adéniyi, coached by Thierry Babagbéto, beat Côte d'Ivoire 13-2 in the final to win gold, one of three medals the team collected at that event.

Domestic Competition

Cotonou's Amazone esplanade, built to host the 2023 World Championships, remains the country's premier competition venue, but Benin's domestic pétanque calendar reaches well beyond the capital.

The FBP's largest home-grown event to date is the Talon Impact Cup, held 28-29 March 2026 in Djadjo, a district of Abomey-Calavi just outside Cotonou: 167 men's triplettes and nearly 100 mixed-doubles teams entered, organized by the federation to thank President Patrice Talon for his sports-development reforms, including hosting the 2023 World Championships.

An inter-departmental national tournament pits Benin's regions against each other: at the inaugural "Nocturne de Pétanque," held over Benin's 65th independence anniversary weekend in August 2025, the Littoral department (covering Cotonou) beat Donga 12-8 in the senior final to take the title.

Benin's government has since made the event a fixture of its own independence-day calendar: the second edition, renamed the Tournoi National de Pétanque, is scheduled for 1-2 August 2026 on the Amazone esplanade in Cotonou, coinciding with the 66th anniversary of Beninese independence and again organized by the national government rather than the FBP alone. Players from all twelve of Benin's departments are set to compete. Ahead of the event, CASB president El-Hadj Ibrahima Idrissou and the FBP held a coordination meeting at the confederation's headquarters on 25 July 2026 to review the federation's activity report and align on preparations for the tournament, according to La Nouvelle Tribune - a sign of the continental confederation's direct involvement in one of its member federations' flagship domestic events.

Club-level pétanque runs on a recurring circuit outside the capital too: Parakou, in the northern Borgou department, held the 9th edition of its "Concours de Pétanque Spécial Aïd El Kebir" at the O'Tabéra boules court on 11 July 2026, organized under federation president Salim Bio Nigan - men played doubles, women played singles free of charge, and matches were broadcast live on Pétanque TV Monde.
