2026 Pétanque World Championship Preview: Khon Kaen, Thailand

The pétanque world's biggest event of 2026 has a new address. The 52nd Men's Triples World Championship and the accompanying Precision Shooting World Championship will be held 20-24 November 2026 on the campus of Khon Kaen University in Khon Kaen, Thailand - not in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, as originally announced.

What Happened to Malaysia's Bid?

In November 2025, the Malaysian Boules Sports Federation (MBSF) announced it had been offered the hosting rights for the 2026 Men's Triples and Precision Shooting World Championship - a first for the country. The plan called for the tournament to run in mid-to-late September 2026 at Arena Petanque in Taman Pudu Ulu, Cheras, Kuala Lumpur, a venue purpose-built for the 2017 SEA Games with 24 indoor and 8 outdoor lanes. MBSF estimated the hosting cost at around RM1.3 million and had begun coordinating with Malaysia's Youth and Sports Ministry to prepare.

That plan did not go ahead. According to Germany's national federation (Deutscher Pétanque Verband), the event "was originally scheduled to take place in Malaysia, but Thailand took over as host after the organizer withdrew due to a lack of financial resources." No FIPJP statement detailing the withdrawal has surfaced publicly, but the outcome is confirmed by the tournament's new official channels: Khon Kaen University now runs the event, branded as the 52nd World Pétanque Championship, with national federations - including Germany - already announcing their squads for the Thailand edition.

Whether Malaysia gets another opportunity to host a future edition remains to be seen.

The Governing Bodies, Briefly

Pétanque's international competitions are organized by the FIPJP, founded in 1958. Since 2021, FIPJP has also been a founding member of the World Pétanque and Bowls Federation (WPBF), an umbrella body recognized by the International Olympic Committee that succeeded the old Confédération Mondiale Sport Boules and now represents pétanque alongside bocce volo and raffa in the push for eventual Olympic inclusion. Defending Champions from Dijon 2024

Whoever lifts the trophy in Khon Kaen will be dethroning a champion with history behind it. At the 51st World Championship in Dijon, France (5-8 December 2024):

• Men's Triples: Italy won gold, defeating Madagascar 13-11 in the final - Italy's first Men's Triples world title since 1979 in Southampton, a 45-year wait. The winning squad included Diego Rizzi, Alessio Cocciolo, Andrea Chiapello, and Davide Lafore. Both reigning champions will be defending their titles on Thai soil this November.

Qualification and Early Team News

FIPJP runs its qualification process through continental confederations. Australia and Tahiti have already secured their spots via the Oceania Confederation Championships, according to FIPJP's own event listings. European nations not otherwise qualified go through a separate European qualifying tournament.

National federations are already naming their squads. Germany's federation confirmed its Men's Triples team on 14 July 2026: Tehina Anania, Tobias Müller, Moritz Rosik, and Fabian Vonberg, with Anania also representing Germany in Precision Shooting. The squad will be led on-site by national coach Sascha Koch and sports director Sebastian Lechner.

Expect more national federations to confirm their rosters through the summer and early autumn as the November dates approach.
