Pétanque in Chad

Pétanque in Chad is organized under a national federation whose team, nicknamed the Sao Pétanque after the country's ancient Sao civilization (the same nickname used by Chad's national football team), has competed at continental level and once signed specifications to host a FIPJP World Championship. Domestically, the sport runs on a mix of federation-organized talent searches, a provincial zone circuit based in the south, and community tournaments in the capital and regional towns.

Federation and National Team

The Fédération Tchadienne de Pétanque governs the sport nationally and is affiliated with the African Confederation under the FIPJP. The federation is led by president Bachar Ibrahim, who was still presiding over federation events as recently as a June 2026 provincial tournament in Laï. The national squad competes under the nickname Sao Pétanque, drawn from the Sao, an ancient civilization associated with the Lake Chad basin - the same nickname borne by Chad's national football team.

A World Championship Bid That Fell Through

On April 19, 2014, in Cotonou, Benin, FIPJP president Claude Azéma and Chad's then-Minister of Youth and Sports Adi Forté signed the specifications for Chad to host both the 2015 African Pétanque Championship and the 2016 Pétanque World Championship, with the minister pledging his country's full effort to make the events a success. The world championship bid did not survive, however: FIPJP initially shortlisted Chad alongside Tahiti (French Polynesia) for 2016, but by that April had set Chad's candidacy aside for security reasons after it drew little support in the federation's vote, awarding the tournament to Polynesia as the "safer" option. The 2016 World Championship ultimately took place not in Tahiti but in Madagascar's capital Antananarivo, from December 1-4, 2016.

Continental Competition

Chad has fielded a national team at the Championnat d'Afrique des Nations (CAN) de pétanque, the continental qualifying event for the FIPJP World Championship. At the 8th edition, held in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, from November 5-7, 2021, Chad competed among 16 African nations - including Algeria, Benin, Cameroon, Comoros, Cote d'Ivoire, Guinea, Madagascar, Mali, Morocco, Mauritania, Niger, Senegal, and Togo among others - vying for qualification to the 2022 World Championship in Cotonou, Benin.

Domestic Structure: Talent Searches and the Zone Sud Circuit

Ahead of that 2022 World Championship push, the Fédération Tchadienne de Pétanque organized a talent-detection competition from December 3-5, 2021, at the Paris-Congo stadium in N'Djamena, pitting a selection from the capital against players from six provincial leagues - Pala, Bongor, Gounou-Gaya, Moundou, Doba, and Kélo - with the aim of strengthening the Sao Pétanque squad. The capital's players outperformed the provincial selection in both Precision Shooting and Triples, with Raymond Ounay beating Djordjor of the provincial selection in the Precision Shooting final.

Chad's south has since developed its own recurring competition, the Zone Sud (Southern Zone) tournament, bringing together teams from seven southern provinces plus N'Djamena. Its 7th edition concluded on June 7, 2026, in Laï, in Tandjilé province: As Doud de Laï won the championship title with 18 points, ahead of runner-up Kélo on 15 points, while in the separate cup competition N'Djamena 1 beat N'Djamena 2 13-10 in the final.

Community and Grassroots Pétanque

Pétanque in Chad also has a visible grassroots and civic dimension. In August 2025, Fayçal AbdelKerim Chiguefat, the deputy for the Ouara department, organized a pétanque final in Abéché between teams representing the Ouara and Abougoudam districts - an example of local politicians using the sport for constituency engagement outside the federation's own calendar. In the capital, a privately sponsored N'Djamena Pétanque Tournament has become a recurring end-of-year fixture: its 2nd edition ran December 27-29, 2025, at the Hôtel La Tchadienne, with energy drink brand XXL Energy (from Boissons Rafraîchissantes du Tchad) as official partner, drawing both experienced club players and casual participants over three days of play.

The Chadian Pétanque Scene

From a federation-run national team that once came within a FIPJP vote of hosting a World Championship, to a provincial zone circuit rotating through southern towns like Laï and a sponsor-backed capital tournament, Chad has built a modest but multi-layered pétanque structure. With the Sao Pétanque squad continuing to use domestic talent searches to prepare for continental qualifiers, and local politicians and sponsors adding their own events to the calendar, the sport's footprint in Chad extends well beyond N'Djamena.
