Pétanque in Croatia

Croatia's boules scene follows a governance model familiar from neighboring Italy: a single national federation covers several related disciplines under one roof, with pétanque as one official branch alongside bocce's other codes. The Hrvatski boćarski savez (HBS), or Croatian Bocce Federation, has run boules sport in the country since the early 1950s, and its pétanque-specific arm has produced the country's best-ever result at a Confédération Mondiale des Sports de Boules (CMSB) world championship.

History

The HBS was founded on 10 October 1951 in Rijeka (some sources cite 1952) and has been a member of the Fédération Internationale de Boules (FIB), the international body for the raffa and volo bocce disciplines, since 15 January 1992. Pétanque itself arrived in Croatia later and by a different route: the sport is reported to have reached the country via Switzerland, with the first dedicated pétanque club founded in the coastal city of Šibenik. Organized competitive pétanque took a major step forward on 25 July 2020, when the HBS launched the I. Hrvatska petanque liga (First Croatian Pétanque League), Croatia's first formal domestic league for the discipline.

A separate national-federation record on petanque-world.com lists a "Croatian Petanque Federation" entity created in 2007, headquartered at the same Zagreb address as HBS (Trg Krešimira Ćosića 11), which points to pétanque having had some organized federation presence even before the 2020 league launch - the two dates likely reflect different milestones (initial federation registration versus the start of regular league competition) rather than a contradiction, but WebFetch access is blocked sitewide in this environment, so the precise relationship between the two records could not be independently confirmed beyond what WebSearch surfaced.

Domestic Scene

Pétanque competes for attention with Croatia's much older bocce tradition, but the HBS treats it as a full and growing part of its competitive program, mirroring how Italy's Federazione Italiana Bocce governs pétanque as one of three official specialties alongside raffa and volo. The I. Hrvatska petanque liga runs its own seasons and standings through the federation's website, and Šibenik's status as the site of the country's first pétanque club has made it an early hub for the discipline on the Dalmatian coast.

International Results

Croatia's best-known recent world championship result is often cited as the 2023 CMSB Women's and Mixed World Championship, held 8-11 November 2023 in Rumilly, France, where Croatia topped both the medal table and the overall points standings - a result the Croatian Olympic Committee itself described as the boules national team's most successful world championship showing to date. This was not a pétanque event. It was a raffa/lyonnaise ("Sport Boules") world championship organized under the Fédération Internationale de Boules (FIB), the sister body within CMSB that governs HBS's raffa and volo disciplines - not FIPJP, pétanque's international federation. The event formats used (rapid relay shooting, classic pairs, individual classic, mixed rapid relay) do not correspond to FIPJP pétanque competition (doublette, triplette, tête-à-tête, tir de précision), and Croatian and French press covering it (Novi list, boulistenaute.com) consistently used "boćanje"/"Sport Boules" terminology rather than pétanque. The five medals from Rumilly were:

• Gold, rapid relay shooting: Carrolina Bajrić and Ria Vojković
• Gold, classic pairs: Nikol Belasić and Carrolina Bajrić
• Silver, individual classic: Ria Vojković
• Bronze, precision shooting: Nives Jelovica
• Bronze, mixed rapid relay: Ria Vojković and Marino Milićević

These results reflect well on HBS as a multi-discipline boules federation, but they are a raffa/Sport Boules achievement, not a pétanque one. No specific pétanque-only international medal result for Croatia's national team could be independently verified in this research pass - a genuine gap for a future update to close, rather than something to infer from the results above.

Federation

HBS elected new national leadership at a repeat electoral assembly held 1 February 2026 in Zagreb (a first assembly on 6 September 2025 was not validated by the Zagreb City Office due to a procedural error, requiring the re-run): Davor Perica (BS Grada Zagreba) became HBS president for the 2026-2030 term, with Renata Ševerdija (BS Primorsko-goranske županije) elected vice-president, confirmed directly via the federation's own Executive Board page. This supersedes an older petanque-world.com federation record, previously cited here, that named Dragan Putica as president of the pétanque wing - that record predates the February 2026 vote. HBS runs its bocce disciplines (raffa, volo, and pétanque) as one federation rather than giving pétanque a separate branch leader, so Perica's presidency covers all three codes, not pétanque alone. Clubs & Where to Play

Šibenik remains the country's pétanque heartland and now hosts several distinct clubs, not just the one that started it all. PK Dalmatino, founded in 2016 by Milan Gnjidić, was Croatia's first dedicated pétanque club; PK Šibenik followed, based at J.J. Strossmeyera 28; PK Vinske mušice joined the roster on 21 October 2023; and a fourth HBS-registered club, Šubićevac, takes its name from the Šubićevac park-forest above the city, one of the sport's main local playing venues alongside Banj beach. BK Solaris 2015, a long-established Šibenik bowls club historically focused on volo, has also fielded a team in the I. Hrvatska petanque liga.

Šibenik's most decorated club by far is PK Krešimirova grada, fielded by the city's Udruga umirovljenika Krešimirova grada (a local pensioners' association named for Šibenik's historic nickname, "Krešimir's town"). The club won back-to-back 1. Hrvatska petanque liga titles, beating PK Šibenik 5-4 in one national final, and represented Croatia at the 2024 CEP European Cup for national champion clubs in Sin-le-Noble, France (6-9 November 2024) - going 0-3 in the group stage against Meyrin (Switzerland), Riemukaari Kärkölä (Finland), and Luigi Biarese Demonte (Italy).

A short drive north, Vodice has its own club, a women's side that trains and competes on courts at the Hotel Imperijal in Vodice and at Hotel Vrata Krke in nearby Lozovac. Regional press coverage from 2018 put the national total at five clubs at that time - the two in Šibenik, the Vodice women's club, and one each in Zagreb and Crikvenica - a count clearly superseded by the additional Šibenik clubs registered since (Vinske mušice in 2023 among them) and by the I. Hrvatska petanque liga's growth to 10 competing clubs by its 2025/2026 season, per league coverage from the Dalmatian pétanque site Dalmacija Balote.

In the capital, Petanque Klub Zagreb is registered at Antuna Stipančića 11, and Petanque FANS Croatia, based at the Thor combat-and-fitness centre on Padovčeva ulica, promotes the sport locally under the national league's umbrella.

This confirms nine clubs carry a dedicated petanque club page in HBS's own directory: PK Dalmatino, PK Šibenik, PK Krešimirova grada Šibenik, PK Vinske mušice, Šubićevac, PK Vodice, PK Sveti Frane Drniš, PK Krčić, and, newly confirmed here, PK Tribunj (the Valentinovo and Memorijal I. Lambaša tournament host named on the National Competition Calendar below, which was not previously listed as a club in its own right) - along with Solaris 2015 - petanka, a separate federation page confirming BK Solaris 2015's petanque activity has its own dedicated club listing distinct from the parent multi-discipline volo club. Individual club pages in this directory currently render with a title only and no further descriptive text (address, contact, or roster), so this confirms the roster itself but not additional per-club detail beyond what is already documented above. Notably, Petanque Klub Zagreb and Petanque FANS Croatia do not appear under this specific federation directory search - this does not necessarily mean they are not genuine clubs (Croatian sports clubs commonly register locally with a city or county sports registry independent of a national federation's own website directory), but it is a discrepancy worth flagging rather than glossing over: their status as HBS-affiliated clubs specifically, versus independent recreational clubs, could not be confirmed from this source.

HBS publishes a dedicated pétanque-only competition calendar each year (separate from its raffa and volo schedules) on its Kalendari page. The 2026 season runs from mid-February to early December:
