Pétanque in Croatia

Croatia's boules scene follows a governance model familiar from neighboring Italy: a single national federation covers several related disciplines under one roof. The Hrvatski boćarski savez (HBS), or Croatian Bocce Federation, governs the traditional Croatian boćanje codes (volo and raffa) and also pétanque, known locally as petanka. HBS is listed as Croatia's member federation by the European pétanque confederation (CEP), and its pétanque national team made its World Championship debut in 2025.

History

The HBS was founded on 10 October 1951 in Rijeka (some sources cite 1952) and has been a member of the Fédération Internationale de Boules (FIB), the international body for the volo discipline, since 15 January 1992. Pétanque arrived in Croatia much later: the sport is reported to have reached the country via Switzerland, with the first dedicated pétanque club founded in the coastal city of Šibenik. HBS launched the 1. Hrvatska petanka liga (First Croatian Pétanque League, 1. HPL) on 25 July 2020, and a national cup, the Petanka kup Hrvatske, followed in 2021, won in its first edition by PK Dalmatino.

Domestic Scene

Pétanque competes for attention with Croatia's much older bocce tradition, but HBS treats it as a full part of its competitive program, with its own league, cup, national championships, referee exams and a dedicated Pétanque Commission, mirroring how Italy's Federazione Italiana Bocce governs pétanque as one of three official specialties alongside raffa and volo.

The 1. HPL is played as a double round robin, each match consisting of three phases of triples, doubles, singles and mixed games. The league has grown from 8 clubs and 129 registered players in 2025 to 10 clubs and 148 registered players in 2026, when PK Sveti Frane Drniš and ŽBK Labin (from Istria, the league's first club outside the Šibenik-Knin area) joined.

International Results

Croatia does not appear in the CEP's European Championship medal tables. Its international pétanque record so far consists of:

• 2022 CEP European Cup (club champions): PK Dalmatino made Croatia's debut, winning its group before losing in the quarterfinals to the Dutch club 't Dupke, sharing 5th-8th place among 26 clubs.
• 2024 CEP European Cup, Sin-le-Noble, France: PK Krešimirova grada Šibenik represented Croatia and went out in the group stage.
• 2024 friendly: Croatia hosted Slovenia's national team in Šibenik.
• 2025 World Championships (singles and doubles), Rome, September 2025: in what HBS called a "historic appearance" for Croatia, Branka Bilandžija, Ida Čekić, Milan Gnjidić and Krešimir Ivančević entered all five events (men's and women's singles and doubles, mixed doubles), coached by Mate Žurić. The women's pair Bilandžija and Čekić, whose qualifying wins included 13-0 against Senegal and 10-8 against England, reached the round of 16 before losing 6-13 to Tunisia.
• 2026 European Championships (singles and doubles), Lorca, Spain: HBS selected Branka Bilandžija, Ida Čekić, Ozren Mandić and Veselko Bujas, coached by Mate Žurić.

Croatia is better known internationally for the other boules codes. Its biggest recent result, five medals and first place in the medal table at the 2023 women's and mixed world championship in Rumilly, France, came in Sport Boules (raffa/lyonnaise) under FIB, not in pétanque.

Federation

HBS elected Davor Perica (BS Grada Zagreba) as president, with Renata Ševerdija (BS Primorsko-goranske županije) as vice-president. A first electoral assembly on 6 September 2025 was repeated on 1 February 2026 after a procedural problem, and HBS announced the new leadership for the 2026-2030 term the following day. Perica's presidency covers all of HBS's disciplines. Pétanque is overseen by the federation's Pétanque Commission, chaired in 2026 by Mate Žurić, who is also national team coach; Branka Bilandžija is the national team selector (izbornica).

Šibenik's main venues include the Petanka centar Šibenik, the sports centre at Šubićevac, and the Vidici courts; SC Račice in Vodice also hosts national championships. HBS's club directory also lists a Šubićevac pétanque club. Outside Dalmatia, Petanque Klub Zagreb is registered in the capital, though it does not appear in HBS's own club directory.
