Pétanque in Italy

Italy has a deep-rooted boules culture built around bocce, its traditional national game, but pétanque has grown into a fully organized discipline in its own right - to the point that Italy now sits at the very top of the world game. The Federazione Italiana Bocce (FIB) governs pétanque nationally as one of its three official specialties alongside raffa and volo, and Italy is the reigning Individual World Champion nation through Ligurian shooter Diego Rizzi. Croatia, Chile, Peru, Paraguay, Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, and San Marino run pétanque under a similar bocce/bochas-federation umbrella.

History

Organized pétanque in Italy traces back to 1972, when the Federazione Italiana Gioco Pétanque (FIGP) was founded, uniting several thousand enthusiasts concentrated in Liguria and Piedmont. The Club Pétanque Bordighera, on the Ligurian coast near the French border, played the founding role in establishing the federation - fittingly, the same stretch of coastline that decades later produced Italy's greatest-ever player. In 1995, the FIGP merged into the Federazione Italiana Bocce, becoming its dedicated pétanque section rather than a separate body. Two years later, in 1997, Italy marked its international breakthrough with medal-winning performances at the World Games in Lahti, Finland, and the Mediterranean Games in Bari, celebrated that year alongside FIB's own centennial.

Federazione Italiana Bocce (FIB)

The FIB is Italy's CONI-recognized national federation for all boules sports and holds ordinary membership in the FIPJP. Pétanque runs alongside raffa and volo as one of its three competitive specialties, with its own national championship calendar, regional committees, and technical regulations reissued each season. The federation's pétanque section organizes national individual championships (categories A, B, and C) and a national triples (terne) championship, run through regional committees such as Piemonte, Liguria, Lombardia, and Lazio.

Regional Strongholds

Liguria and Piedmont remain pétanque's historic heartland, the two regions that founded the FIGP in 1972 and still field some of the country's strongest clubs and players. Turin, in particular, is a national hub: clubs based along Corso IV Novembre, including A.S.D. Taurinense and Club Pétanque La Mole, have hosted national championship finals on multiple occasions. Milan has built a steady following since MilanoPétanque's founding in the mid-2000s, with matches played outdoors at Parco Sempione and indoors at a dedicated court on Via Candiani during winter. Rome's pétanque scene gained a permanent boost after hosting the sport's biggest stage in 2025.

World Championship Host

Italy has hosted the FIPJP World Championships twice. Aosta staged the 28th Men's Senior Triplette World Championship from 16-20 September 1992. Then, more than three decades later, Rome hosted the 2025 World Championships for Individual, Doublet, and Mixed Doublet at the historic Villa Borghese, in the Galoppatoio district, from 18-21 September 2025 - drawing more than 50 nations from five continents and organized by the FIB with backing from Italy's Ministry of Sport and the city of Rome.

Notable Players

Italy's standout player is Diego Rizzi, "L'Alieno" (The Alien), born in Bordighera on the Ligurian coast - the same corner of Italy where the national federation itself was founded. Rizzi won senior world titles in Doublette (2022, with Alessio Cocciolo), Triplette (2024, in Dijon), and, on home soil at Villa Borghese, the Individual (Tête-à-tête) World Championship in September 2025, defeating Madagascar's Joseph Ramnointiaray 13-8 in the final. Combined with two youth world titles won earlier in his career, Rizzi holds five FIPJP world championships in total, alongside 46 Italian national titles and a co-held world record of 67 points in precision shooting. He now competes for Fréjus International Pétanque in France, where he has also collected French domestic titles - most recently the Championnat de France Triplette Mixte on 19 July 2026, teaming with Dylan Rocher and Catherine Jeanroy.

• Campionati Italiani Individuali (A, B, C): The FIB's official national individual championships, held annually across categories, typically in June.
• Campionato Italiano a Terne: Italy's national triples championship, organized by the FIB's petanque section each spring.
• Campionati Italiani ANCoS: A long-running national amateur championship circuit, recognized by CONI and held in Piedmont since 2006, with recent editions hosted at Turin's Bocciofila Ponchielli.
