Pétanque in Kenya

Kenya was announced as one of the countries due to compete at the inaugural Zone 4 (Indian Ocean) African pétanque championship in 2026, a sub-regional event of the African confederation, alongside Madagascar, Mauritius, Djibouti, Comoros, and Seychelles. Beyond that announcement, we could not independently verify an active domestic pétanque federation, a named president, a club network, or a competition result for a Kenyan team.

The African confederation itself has been split since January 2025, when a congress in Dakar established the Confédération Africaine du Sport de la Pétanque (CASP) as a rival to the long-standing Confédération Africaine des Sports Boules (CASB), led by Idrissou Ibrahima of Benin. On 21 May 2026 the Court of Arbitration for Sport annulled FIPJP's withdrawal of recognition from CASB while holding that this reinstatement does not exclude CASP from the FIPJP, and two days later, on 23 May 2026 in Abidjan, CASP elected Mahmoud Archane, former president of Morocco's pétanque federation, as its president. The two bodies remained split as of autumn 2026.

What We Could Verify

Malagasy press previewing the Zone 4 championship, held 27 April to 3 May 2026 at the boulodrome in Souillac, Mauritius, listed seven expected countries: Madagascar, Mauritius, Seychelles, Comoros, Djibouti, Kenya, and a seventh East African nation still to be confirmed by the confederation. Match reports from the event, however, name only three participating nations (hosts Mauritius, Madagascar, and Djibouti), and we found no report of a Kenyan team or player taking part. We found no FIPJP national-federation record for Kenya of the kind published for other African nations, no National Olympic Committee of Kenya listing for a boules or pétanque body among its affiliated sports, and no press coverage of a Kenyan club, league, or team competing at any zone, continental, or world championship.

Why the Gap

This pattern, a place on a regional entry list without a visible domestic competition structure, mirrors what we've found for other CASB/CASP members with a nominal continental presence but no documented grassroots activity (see Uganda and Zambia for comparable cases on the confederation's broader roster, or Djibouti for a Zone 4 neighbor with more evidence of grassroots play). It's possible organized pétanque exists in Kenya through informal expatriate or diaspora play without yet having a documented federation presence online.
