Pétanque in Kenya

Kenya is named as one of six member federations in Zone 4 (Indian Ocean), a sub-regional grouping of the Confédération Africaine des Sports Boules (CASB), alongside Madagascar, Mauritius, Djibouti, Comoros, and Seychelles. The confederation's structure has been disputed since January 2025, when a rival congress in Dakar - convened, per CASB's own arbitration filing, at FIPJP's instigation - established the Confédération Africaine de Sport Pétanque (CASP) as a parallel body; a May 21, 2026 Court of Arbitration for Sport ruling annulled FIPJP's withdrawal of recognition from the original CASB leadership, though CASP held its own elective general assembly two days later, on 23 May 2026 in Abidjan, where Mahmoud Archane - the outgoing president of Morocco's Fédération Royale Marocaine de Pétanque - was elected CASP president unanimously as the sole candidate, receiving all 19 votes cast by the member-federation representatives present, succeeding interim president Louly Mohamed Lemine after outgoing president Brahim Darwich of Senegal resigned; CASB, meanwhile, remains under its long-serving president, Idrissou Ibrahima of Benin. The two bodies remain split as of September 2026, with no public sign of reconciliation. Beyond that roster listing, we could not independently verify an active domestic pétanque federation, a named president, a club network, or a competition result for a Kenyan team.

What We Could Verify

Kenya's inclusion in Zone 4 is corroborated by Malagasy press coverage of the zone's inaugural championship, held 27 April - 3 May 2026 at the national boulodrome in Souillac, Mauritius, which named all six member federations while reporting that only Mauritius, Madagascar, and Djibouti actually sent delegations - Kenya, Comoros, and Seychelles did not compete. This zone-specific membership is notably narrower than the roughly two dozen countries on the CASB/CASP's broader continental roster (a 2019 published list of that wider membership does not include Kenya at all), so Kenya's federation appears to hold, at most, a sub-regional seat rather than full continental standing. We found no FIPJP national-federation record of the kind published for other African nations, no National Olympic Committee of Kenya listing for a boules or pétanque body among its affiliated sports, and no press coverage of a Kenyan club, league, or team competing at any zone, continental, or world championship.

Why the Gap

This pattern - a named seat in a regional grouping without a visible domestic competition structure - mirrors what we've found for other CASB/CASP members with a nominal continental presence but no documented grassroots activity (see Uganda and Zambia for comparable cases on the confederation's broader roster, or Djibouti for a Zone 4 neighbor with more evidence of grassroots play). It's possible organized pétanque exists in Kenya through informal expatriate or diaspora play, similar to its origins in several neighboring countries, without yet having a documented federation presence online.
