Pétanque in Uganda
Uganda appears on multiple published rosters of national federations affiliated with the Confédération Africaine des Sports Boules (CASB), alongside around two dozen other African federations including Senegal, Mauritius, Gabon, and Libya. The confederation's own name has been disputed since a January 2024 vote to rename it the Confédération Africaine de Sport Pétanque (CASP); a May 21, 2026 Court of Arbitration for Sport ruling restored recognition to the original CASB leadership, though a rival CASP leadership was elected days later, leaving the body's structure unsettled as of mid-2026. Beyond that roster listing, we could not independently verify an active domestic pétanque federation, a named president, a club network, or a competition result for a Ugandan team.
What We Could Verify
Uganda's presence on the CASB/CASP affiliated-federations list is corroborated across several independent press and reference sources reporting the confederation's roughly 24-member roster. Uganda's National Council of Sports, the statutory body that regulates and gazettes sports federations domestically, lists dozens of recognized associations covering sports from football to woodball, but our searches did not turn up a boules or pétanque entry among them, nor a listing on the Uganda Olympic Committee's federations page. We also found no FIPJP national-federation record of the kind published for other African nations, no named federation official, and no press coverage of a Ugandan team or player competing at an African or World Championship.
Why the Gap
This pattern - a nominal seat in the continental confederation without a visible domestic competition structure - mirrors what we've found for other smaller CASB/CASP members (see Djibouti for a comparable case with more evidence of grassroots play, or Palau for a similar gap in a different confederation). It's possible organized pétanque exists in Uganda through informal expatriate or diaspora play, similar to its origins in several neighboring countries, without yet having a documented federation presence online.
