Pétanque in Lithuania

Pétanque in Lithuania is organized by the Lietuvos petankės asociacija (LPA), the Lithuanian Petanque Association, a compact but active scene of around 100 licensed players concentrated in Kaunas, with clubs also in Vilnius, Šiauliai, Birštonas, and Druskininkai. Since 2018 the association has grown from three founding clubs to a national federation whose players have brought home Lithuania's first medals at a European Championship.

History

Organized pétanque in Lithuania traces back to 2006, when a Lietuvos petankės federacija (Lithuanian Petanque Federation) was formed and went on to hold the country's first national tournament-championship in 2007, followed by further tournaments through 2008-2010. Available sources do not make clear how directly that early federation connects to today's association, so this profile treats it as an earlier, separate chapter of the sport's history in the country rather than assuming unbroken continuity.

The modern LPA was founded in 2018, when three of Lithuania's largest clubs at the time agreed to establish a national association. Klubas Boules LT, based in Kaunas, is described by the association as one of the first pétanque clubs in the country, while Vilniaus petankės klubas Sostinė was the first club founded in the capital.

Governance Today

The LPA today unites eight member clubs - three in Kaunas, plus clubs in Kaunas District, Šiauliai, Vilnius, Birštonas, and Druskininkai - with roughly 100 licensed players competing nationally and internationally. The association's public website lists its governing documents (statutes, competition rules, national-team selection criteria, an ethics and disciplinary code, and anti-doping and match-fixing prevention programs) but does not publish the names of its current president or board, so this profile does not assert specific leadership names.

International Results

Lithuania's breakthrough came at the 2022 European Pétanque Championship in Hertogenbosch, Netherlands (13-17 July), where the women's doubles pairing of Irma Bagdanavičienė and Eugenija Karbočienė won three of five qualifying matches before falling to Monaco in the semifinal, securing a bronze medal - the first medal Lithuanian pétanque players had won at a major international championship. At the same event, the mixed pair of Bagdanavičienė and Paulius Bagdanavičius finished 9th, the men's doubles pair of Almantas Burneika and Bagdanavičius finished 5th in the Nations Cup, and Karbočienė and Burneika each placed 5th and 9th respectively in the singles Nations Cup standings.

Lithuania built on that result at the 2024 European Pétanque Championship in Switzerland, where the Nations Cup produced two gold medals: Irma Bagdanavičienė in women's singles, and the mixed pair of Doringa Burneikienė and Almantas Burneika. At the 2025 World Championships, held across Italy and France, Lithuanian teams competed in singles, doubles, and mixed categories with Nations Cup placements ranging from 17th to 42nd.

Regional Ties

Lithuania is one of four nations, alongside Estonia, Latvia, and Finland, that contest the annual Baltic Sea Cup for Clubs, a regional club competition rotated among the participating countries; the 2025 edition, held in Tallinn, was won by Estonia's Tõrva petangiklubi, and the 2026 edition is scheduled for 12-13 September in Lithuania. Kaunas-based clubs also maintain direct ties with the Confédération Européenne de Pétanque (CEP) and with the neighboring Latvian, Polish, and Estonian federations.

National Competition Calendar

The LPA runs a full domestic season of licensed championships from roughly April through August, covering men's and women's singles, men's and women's precision shooting, doubles, mixed doubles, triples, and a six-a-side club championship, alongside open tournaments such as the annual season-opening event. The scene's depth was on display at the 2021 national singles championship in Kaunas, where around 160 players filled all available court space within days of registration opening; Irma Bagdanavičienė and her husband Paulius Bagdanavičius, both representing club A3-Vėtra, won the women's and men's titles on the same day. In club competition, A3 petankės klubas has been the team to beat, winning the six-a-side club championship in 2024, 2025, and 2026.

Lithuania's eight LPA-affiliated clubs are A3 petankės klubas and Kauno petankės klubas in Kaunas, Klubas Boules LT (also Kaunas, one of the country's oldest), PSK Kauno rajonas in Kaunas District, PSK Šiauliai in Šiauliai, Vilniaus petankės klubas Sostinė in Vilnius, Birštono petankės klubas in Birštonas, and Druskininkų petankės klubas in Druskininkai. Kaunas, home to three of the eight clubs, remains the country's clearest hub for the sport.
