Pétanque in Lithuania

Pétanque in Lithuania is organized by the Lietuvos petankės asociacija (LPA), the Lithuanian Petanque Association, a compact but active scene of around 100 licensed players concentrated in Kaunas, with clubs also in Vilnius, Šiauliai, Birštonas, and Druskininkai. Since 2018 the association has grown from three founding clubs to a national federation whose players have brought home Lithuania's first medals at a European Championship.

History

Organized pétanque in Lithuania traces back to 2006, when a Lietuvos petankės federacija (Lithuanian Petanque Federation) was formed and went on to hold the country's first national tournament-championship in 2007, followed by further tournaments through 2008-2010. Available sources do not make clear how directly that early federation connects to today's association, so this profile treats it as an earlier, separate chapter of the sport's history in the country rather than assuming unbroken continuity.

The modern LPA was founded in 2018, when three of Lithuania's largest clubs at the time agreed to establish a national association. Klubas Boules LT, based in Kaunas, is described by the association as one of the first pétanque clubs in the country, while Vilniaus petankės klubas Sostinė was the first club founded in the capital.

Governance Today

The LPA today unites eight member clubs - three in Kaunas, plus clubs in Kaunas District, Šiauliai, Vilnius, Birštonas, and Druskininkai - with roughly 100 licensed players competing nationally and internationally. The association is led by President Almantas Burneika, elected on 22 January 2025 for a term running to 2029, with a three-member board of Robertas Travkinas, Irma Bagdanavičienė, and Kristina Dailidaitė, elected on 28 August 2024. Its website also publishes its statutes, board and general-meeting minutes, annual and audited financial reports, competition rules, national-team selection criteria, an ethics and disciplinary code, and anti-doping and match-fixing prevention programs.

International Results

Lithuania's breakthrough came at the 2022 European Pétanque Championship in 's-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands (13-17 July), where the women's doubles pairing of Irma Bagdanavičienė and Eugenija Karbočienė won three of five qualifying matches before falling to Monaco in the semifinal, securing a bronze medal - the first medal Lithuanian pétanque players had won at a major international championship. At the same event, the mixed pair of Bagdanavičienė and Paulius Bagdanavičius reached the last 16 (9th-16th), the men's doubles pair of Almantas Burneika and Bagdanavičius finished 23rd, and in singles Karbočienė placed 20th and Burneika 25th.

Lithuania built on that result at the 2024 European Pétanque Championship in Martigny, Switzerland, where the Nations Cup produced two gold medals: Irma Bagdanavičienė in women's singles, and the mixed pair of Doringa Burneikienė and Almantas Burneika. The Nations Cup is a consolation competition for teams that miss the main championship draw, so the 2022 doubles bronze remains Lithuania's only medal on the CEP's official European Championship medal table. At the 2026 European Championship in Lorca, Spain, Kristina Dailidaitė reached the last 16 of the women's singles. At the 2025 World Championships, Lithuania's placements ranged from 17th to 42nd across two separate events, per the LPA's own published results: at the World Women's Triples Championship in Douai, France, the team of Irma Bagdanavičienė, Doringa Burneikienė, Kristina Dailidaitė, and Andra Ivaniuščenko finished 25th, while Bagdanavičienė placed 17th in the accompanying precision-shooting event - the country's best individual result at that year's Worlds. At the World Individual and Doubles Championship in Rome, Italy, Lithuania's results were: women's doubles (Bagdanavičienė and Dailidaitė), 22nd; mixed doubles (Bagdanavičienė and Paulius Bagdanavičius), 24th; men's singles (Paulius Rulinskas), 26th; men's doubles (Bagdanavičius and Rulinskas), 31st; and women's singles (Dailidaitė), 42nd.

Regional Ties

Lithuania is one of four nations, alongside Estonia, Latvia, and Finland, that contest the annual Baltic Sea Cup for Clubs (branded in 2026 as the "Baltic Sea Club Cup"), a regional club competition rotated among the participating countries; the 2025 edition, held in Tallinn, was won by Estonia's Tõrva petangiklubi. The 2026 edition was held as planned on 12-13 September in Kaunas, bringing together eight clubs from all four countries in parallel clubs' and nations' competitions. Finland's Kuulas Helsinki won the clubs' trophy, ahead of Latvia's SK Kangars (silver) and Estonia's Tõrva Petanque Club (bronze); the host nation's A3 Petanque Club finished fourth. Lithuania fared better in the nations' competition, where PSK Šiauliai took gold for the country, beating Finland's Jyväskylän Valo in the final, with Estonia's Viru Sports Club taking bronze and Latvia's Upesciema Warriors finishing fourth. Individually, A3's Almantas Burneika was one of three players to go through the singles draw undefeated (5-0), and Irma Bagdanavičienė, also of A3, went undefeated in the triples event; the tournament's overall MVP was Estonia's K. Kanguras of Tõrva Petanque Club, who won 11 of 14 matches across the weekend. Kaunas-based clubs also maintain direct ties with the Confédération Européenne de Pétanque (CEP) and with the neighboring Latvian, Polish, and Estonian federations.

National Competition Calendar

The LPA runs a full domestic season of licensed championships from roughly April through August, covering men's and women's singles, men's and women's precision shooting, doubles, mixed doubles, triples, and a six-a-side club championship, alongside open tournaments such as the annual season-opening event. The scene's depth was on display at the 2021 national singles championship in Kaunas, where around 160 players filled all available court space within days of registration opening; Irma Bagdanavičienė and her husband Paulius Bagdanavičius, both representing club A3-Vėtra, won the women's and men's titles on the same day. In club competition, A3 petankės klubas has been the team to beat, winning the six-a-side Lithuanian Club Cup four years running from 2023 to 2026 (earlier editions went to PSK Šiauliai in 2019 and 2021 and to Kauno petankės klubas in 2020 and 2022), and representing Lithuania at the European Cup for Clubs; the 2026 title, decided in Kaunas, came with a 25-win-from-44-match record (56.8%), ahead of silver medalist PSK Šiauliai and bronze medalist Kauno petankės klubas; A3's Almantas Burneika was the tournament's standout individual performer, winning 11 of his 12 matches (91.7%). Lithuania's 2026 individual national champions, per the LPA's published results, were Evaldas Kievišas (men's singles, ahead of silver medalist Vytautas Gedminas and bronze medalist Robertas Travkinas) and Kristina Dailidaitė (women's singles, ahead of silver medalist Bagdanavičienė and bronze medalist Rasa Mockuvienė). At the 28 July 2026 national precision-shooting championship in Kaunas's Draugystės parkas, Burneika won the men's title with 34 points ahead of silver medalist Robertas Travkinas and bronze medalist Paulius Bagdanavičius (Gintaras Račkus finished fourth), while Bagdanavičienė won the women's title. The 14 May 2026 national doubles championship - the LPA's first - drew 23 teams to Šiauliai despite cold, rainy weather; Burneika and Nerijus Kukcinavičius went undefeated to win gold, ahead of silver medalists Ričardas Balčiauskas and Račkus (both of PSK Šiauliai). At the 2 September 2026 national mixed doubles championship, Bagdanavičienė and Bagdanavičius also went undefeated to win gold, ahead of silver medalists Margarita Pociūtė and Rolandas Kukcinavičius and bronze medalists Doringa Burneikienė and Burneika.

Clubs & Where to Play

Lithuania's eight LPA-affiliated clubs are A3 petankės klubas and Kauno petankės klubas in Kaunas, Klubas Boules LT (also Kaunas, one of the country's oldest), PSK Kauno rajonas in Kaunas District, PSK Šiauliai in Šiauliai, Vilniaus petankės klubas Sostinė in Vilnius, Birštono petankės klubas in Birštonas, and Druskininkų petankės klubas in Druskininkai. Kaunas, home to three of the eight clubs, remains the country's clearest hub for the sport.

Kaunas is scheduled to host the CEP's 15th European Triples and Precision Shooting Championships for Juniors and Espoirs (boys, girls, men, and women) on 12-15 August 2027.
