Governance Crisis at the 2025 SEA Games

Thailand's status as the region's petanque powerhouse was briefly jeopardized in September 2025, when the World Pétanque and Bowls Federation (WPBF) suspended the Petanque Association of Thailand (PAT) for two years and withdrew its endorsement of petanque at the 33rd SEA Games, which Thailand was set to host that December. The WPBF cited a governance crisis at PAT, including allegations of embezzlement, election fraud, and sexual assault against former PAT president Sutthiroj Praphanphat (also transliterated Prapanpat) - who the federation said had already received a lifetime ban but was continuing to exert influence over the association from behind the scenes - and it criticized Thailand's Sports Authority over how petanque funding had been managed. Any nation that entered petanque athletes at the Games in defiance of the suspension risked a two-year ban of its own, a real threat to the sport's participation at the event.

Thailand's National Olympic Committee moved quickly to resolve the dispute: a delegation traveled to France on 29 September 2025 to meet WPBF president Claude Azéma, presenting a government-co-signed commitment to overhaul PAT's governance. Sutthiroj resigned as PAT president effective 8 October 2025, and Azéma confirmed petanque's reinstatement as a full medal sport at the Games days later.

Petanque was ultimately contested 10-15 December 2025 at Valaya Alongkorn Rajabhat University in Pathum Thani, as part of the Thailand-hosted 33rd SEA Games (9-20 December 2025). Host Thailand topped the petanque medal table with 5 gold, 4 silver, and 1 bronze, ahead of Vietnam (3 gold, 1 silver, 4 bronze) and Laos (2 gold, 2 silver, 6 bronze) - a result that kept the country's SEA Games dominance intact despite the crisis.
