Pétanque in Australia is organized under Pétanque Federation Australia (PFA), the Australian Sports Commission-recognized national sporting organization for the sport. The PFA coordinates five state leagues and around 59 affiliated clubs nationwide, with roughly 1,700 licensed players.
History
Pétanque arrived in Australia in the 1970s through French expatriates, and the country's oldest club, Club de Pétanque d'Adelaide, was founded in 1977 in South Australia. As the sport spread through the following decade, clubs banded together and incorporated Petanque Australia (PA) as a national body in 1986, which became a member of the FIPJP in 1990. In April 2008, the organization renamed itself Pétanque Federation Australia (PFA) to reflect its role as the sport's national governing federation, made up of an elected executive representing club affiliations across the country.
Structure & Competition
The PFA is composed of five state leagues, each overseeing its own clubs and calendar. Victoria is by far the country's strongest state for pétanque: Victoria Pétanque Clubs Inc. (VPCI) counts 25 clubs organized into three regions (Metropolitan, North-West, and South-East/Mornington Peninsula) and around 900 licensed players, more than half the national total. Petanque WA, the Western Australian league, oversees clubs including Subiaco, Bayswater, Busselton, and Rockingham, while the SA Pétanque League (SAPL) in South Australia counts nine member clubs, including the country's oldest club and Feral Aussie Boulistes.
Australia belongs to the seven-member Oceania Confederation, alongside New Zealand, New Caledonia, French Polynesia (Tahiti), Vanuatu, Palau, and Wallis and Futuna. Oceania Championships are held every two years and, since 2010, have served as the region's qualifying tournament for the FIPJP World Championships. Australia and New Zealand have also faced off annually in a Trans-Tasman match (Open and 60+ divisions) since 2003. At the 2025 Oceania Confederation Championship (16-19 October 2025, Kafika boulodrome, Wallis and Futuna), Australia's men's triples squad of Bronson Romani, Shane Howarth, Eric Carbonell (WA), and Graham Smith (ACT) lost to Tahiti but defeated New Caledonia to secure qualification alongside Tahiti for the 2026 Men's Triples World Championship - originally slated for Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, but relocated to Khon Kaen, Thailand (20-24 November 2026) after Malaysia's hosting bid fell through.

Major Tournaments
- PFA National Championships: Australia's premier domestic event, held every year over the Easter long weekend (typically late March or April). Four events - Singles, Doubles, Mixed Doubles, and Triples - are contested across four divisions (Open, Women's, Open 60+, and Women's 60+), hosted by a club awarded the event through a competitive bid for a three-year term. The 2026 edition ran across two Adelaide venues, Novar Gardens Pétanque Club and Eastern Suburbs Pétanque Club (ESP) at Unley Park Sports Club, with Singles held Thursday 2 April and Doubles Saturday 4 April. Novar Gardens and Subiaco Pétanque Club (Perth) have hosted other recent editions.
- Victorian Doubles and Triples Championships: VPCI's flagship state titles, held annually in September (Doubles) and November (Triples) and open to Victoria's 25 affiliated clubs.
Clubs & Hotspots
Club de Pétanque d'Adelaide, founded in 1977, is Australia's oldest club and a founding pillar of the sport's growth in South Australia. Also in Adelaide, Feral Aussie Boulistes plays weekly at Rundle Park and Eastern Suburbs Pétanque Club (ESP) meets Wednesday evenings at Unley Park Sports Club, both among SAPL's nine member clubs; ESP co-hosted the 2026 PFA National Championships. In Perth, Western Australia, Subiaco Pétanque Club and Bayswater Pétanque Club are long-running affiliates of Petanque WA, both offering loaner boules and coaching for newcomers. Victoria remains the country's hub, with clubs such as Camberwell Pétanque Club (founded 1998) and St Kilda Pétanque Club (founded 1992) anchoring the Melbourne metropolitan region within VPCI's 25-club network.
