Pétanque in New Zealand

Pétanque has grown from a single Auckland tournament in the early 1990s into a nationwide sport, governed today by Pétanque New Zealand (PNZ) and played from Orewa in the north to Invercargill in the south.

History

The game arrived in New Zealand in the early 1990s through enthusiasts and boules importers who began promoting it, and the country's first tournament was held in Devonport, Auckland, in 1992. The following year, players formed the New Zealand Pétanque Association at a publicly advertised meeting at Auckland's Atomic Café, and on 1 June 1994 the body registered as an Incorporated Society under the name Pétanque New Zealand. PNZ has since affiliated to the FIPJP, the sport's international governing body.

Structure & Clubs

PNZ now oversees roughly 33 affiliated clubs, down from a 2012 peak of 45, spread across both islands. Herne Bay Petanque Club, incorporated in Auckland on 14 November 1995, is one of the country's original clubs and carries the largest membership in the city; its 20-piste terrain regularly hosts regional, national, and international tournaments. Wellington-region clubs, including Silverstream, Kāpiti, Horowhenua, and Ōtaki, play under the Wellington Pétanque Association, while the South Island is represented by clubs in Christchurch, Dunedin, and Invercargill.

Oceania Confederation

New Zealand is one of the seven members of the Confédération de Pétanque de l'Océanie (Oceania Confederation), alongside Australia, New Caledonia, French Polynesia (Tahiti), Vanuatu, Palau, and Wallis and Futuna. The Oceania Championship has been held every two years since 2010 and doubles as the region's qualifying event for the FIPJP World Championships. At the October 2025 edition, hosted in Wallis and Futuna, French Polynesia and Australia qualified for the 2026 Men's Triples World Championship - originally set for Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, but relocated to Khon Kaen, Thailand (20-24 November 2026) after Malaysia's hosting bid fell through.

Major Tournaments

PNZ runs nine national championships across the season, including Singles, Doubles, Senior (60+) Doubles, Women's Triples, Mixed Doubles (added to the calendar in 2017), and a season-closing Club Championship. In the 2025-26 season, the Singles title was decided on 31 October 2025 at Dunedin City Pétanque Club, the Doubles Championship on 14-15 February 2026 at Horowhenua Pétanque Club, the Mixed Doubles Championship on 7-8 March 2026 at Kāpiti Pétanque Club, and the season-closing Club Championship on 18-19 April 2026 at Tauranga Bay of Plenty Pétanque Club in Mt Maunganui.

New Zealand and Australia have also met annually in the Trans-Tasman match (Open and 60+ divisions) since 2003. The 2025 edition in Christchurch split the honours, with New Zealand taking the 60+ section 65-55 and Australia the Open section 63-57; at the 2026 rematch, held 21-22 March at Mt Martha Pétanque Club in Victoria, Australia swept both divisions, 98-46 in the Open and 74-46 in the 60+.

Clubs & Hotspots

Auckland remains the country's stronghold, anchored by Herne Bay Petanque Club and Panmure Pioneers Petanque Club. In the Bay of Plenty, Tauranga Bay of Plenty Petanque Club fields a growing membership, while the capital's Wellington Pétanque Association links clubs across Silverstream, Kāpiti, Horowhenua, and Ōtaki. Further south, Christchurch, Dunedin City, and Invercargill clubs give the South Island a competitive circuit of its own, with Christchurch and Dunedin having hosted recent national and Trans-Tasman fixtures.
