Pétanque in Brunei

Brunei is one of the smaller members of the Asian Boules Sports Confederation (ABSC) by federation size, with a modest and thinly documented international record. The Brunei Darussalam Pétanque Federation, based in the capital, Bandar Seri Begawan, joined the Fédération Internationale de Pétanque et Jeu Provençal (FIPJP) in 2007.

2025 Asian Pétanque Championship

The 6th Asian Pétanque Championship was held in November 2025 at Arena Petanque Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, with 141 participants from 15 countries. Brunei did not feature among the medal-table leaders: published coverage by the New Straits Times and Utusan Malaysia lists Thailand first with three golds, ahead of Cambodia (two golds, one silver), Indonesia (one gold, one bronze) and host Malaysia in fourth (three silvers, three bronzes). The top three nations account for all six gold medals on offer, and while Brunei appears in the list of entered nations cited on South Korea's profile, no report found names a Brunei team or player among the medallists or finalists.

Brunei Darussalam Pétanque Federation

Per FIPJP's own nation record, the federation was founded and became a FIPJP member in 2007. Its registered address is Stadium Negara Hassanal Bolkiah, Bandar Seri Begawan, BB 4313, Brunei Darussalam - the country's national stadium complex. The FIPJP record lists Haji Mohammad bin Panglima Asgar Dato Paduka Haji Abdullah as president, alongside two phone numbers and two contact emails (brunei@fipjp.com and bruneisportsboules.bdsbf@hotmail.com).

A separate, older source - the federation's own archived blog at bruneidarussalampetanquefederation.blogspot.com - lists a different leadership as of its last substantive post (7 December 2015): president Lt Kol (B) Pengiran Mohd Noor bin Pengiran Hj Muhiddi, vice president Abdul Ghani bin Dato Paduka Hj Mohd Ali, secretary general Haji Rosmin bin Haji Mohd Hassan, and assistant secretary Awg Johari bin Haji Bakar. Since that blog has not been updated since 2015 and FIPJP's own record is the more recent authoritative source, this profile treats the FIPJP-listed president as current; the blog's leadership list is presented here as historical context rather than a claim about who leads the federation today.

Borneo Cup History

Brunei's federation blog documents an earlier period of regional club activity: the 6th Borneo Cup Pétanque Championship and 5th Borneo Inter-Clubs Pétanque Championship, held in December 2015, and the 1st Borneo Inter-Club Championship in 2010, which drew teams from Brunei and Malaysia (including a team from MLNG in Bintulu, Sarawak). No record of the Borneo Cup continuing beyond 2015 was found. Brunei's delegation to the 2025 SEA Games in Bangkok did not include pétanque among its sports.

What We Could Not Verify

How Brunei's entrants fared at the November 2025 Asian Pétanque Championship, beyond not reaching the medal-table leaders, could not be confirmed. Beyond the FIPJP nation record, no clubs, registered players, or ongoing domestic 2026 activity could be independently confirmed for pétanque in Brunei. Whether the federation is still active under its FIPJP-listed president, whether the Borneo Cup has continued in any form since 2015, and which of the two differing presidential names (FIPJP's 2007-era record versus the blog's 2015-era leadership list) reflects the federation's actual current leadership could not be confirmed from available sources as of this writing.

Correction to a claim this profile previously made: earlier versions named the continental confederation referenced in the opening section as the "Asian Pétanque and Sports Boules Confederation (APSBC)." That name could not be corroborated anywhere, including on FIPJP's own site and its own Asian Confederation page, which names the real continental body simply the Asian Boules Sport Confederation - the same unsourced name already found and removed from several other countries' profiles on this site. It has been corrected to the confederation's real name, the Asian Boules Sports Confederation (ABSC), above.

Correction (2026-10-11): earlier versions of this profile stated that Brunei topped the overall medal table at the 2025 Asian Pétanque Championship, ahead of Chinese Taipei. That claim was unsupported: published results show Thailand, Cambodia, Indonesia and Malaysia as the top four, with all six golds going to the first three of those nations. The claim has been removed.
