Pétanque in Malaysia

Malaysia has emerged as one of Southeast Asia's strongest pétanque nations at the regional level, built around a purpose-built national venue and a steady run of SEA Games and Asian Championship medals. The country was set to take center stage in 2026 as host of the FIPJP World Pétanque Championships, before a funding shortfall forced the tournament to relocate to Thailand.

Federation

The Malaysian Boules Sports Federation (MBSF) is the national governing body for boules sports in Malaysia, overseeing pétanque alongside boule lyonnaise and raffa volo. According to the federation's own account, MBSF was established on 1 December 2018, received the endorsement of the Asian Boules Sports Confederation (ABSC) on 15 May 2019, and was recognized by FIPJP two days later on 17 May 2019. MBSF registered with Malaysia's Sports Commissioner's Office on 25 September 2020, became a founding member of the World Pétanque Bowls Federation (WPBF) on 27 February 2021, and the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) accepted MBSF as an associate member on 17 February 2023. Pétanque itself has a longer history in the country, having been introduced as a recreational and community sport in the late 1980s before its competitive scene formalized decades later. MBSF's leadership includes President Cheah Ban Cheng, Vice President Tan Sri Mhd Amin Nordin bin Abdul Aziz, and Chairperson Tan Sri Dato' Seri Mohamad Noor Abdul Rahim.

Federation Contact

MBSF's office is at Level 4, Wisma OCM (Olympic Council of Malaysia), Jalan Hang Jebat, 50150 Kuala Lumpur, and can be reached at malaysiaboules@gmail.com or secretary@mbsf.my, or by phone at +60 16-228 6384 - per the federation's own current mbsf.my contact page. SEA Games Success

Pétanque has been a Southeast Asian Games medal sport since Malaysia first hosted the Games in 2001, and the national team has become a consistent medal contender:

  • 2019 SEA Games (Philippines): Malaysia won gold in Men's Triples, defeating Thailand 13-11 in the final.
  • 2023 SEA Games (Cambodia): Malaysia topped its previous result with a full medal haul - gold for Saiful Bahri (Bahrin) Musmin in Men's Individual (beating Laos's Bountamy Southammavong 13-9), silver in Mixed Triples, and bronze in Women's Individual (Nur Durratul Iffah Yazit), Men's Doubles, and Mixed Triples.
  • 2025 SEA Games (Thailand): Malaysia hit its pre-Games target of four medals, all bronze - Muhd Nuzul Azwan Ahmad Temizi in Men's Individual Precision Shooting (lost the semifinal 38-37 to Indonesia's Satria Topan); Syed Afiq Fakhri Syed Ali, Khairul Amirul Zamrulhisham, and Mohamad Muqri Arif Mohamad Sapiny in Men's Triples; Jasnina Jasmine Johan Johnson, Thadis Henrera Vennice, and Nur Durratul Sahira Yazit in Women's Triples; and Ayzek Hakimi Safingan with Sharifah Afiqah Farzana Syed Ali in Mixed Doubles (lost the semifinal 13-8 to the Philippines' Ronnel Fuentes and Clyde Joy Baria). Thailand topped the petanque medal table with 5 gold.

Malaysia's women's team also won the 2025 Nations Cup in Italy, beating the host nation 13-6 in the final for the country's first title at that tournament - the squad was Nur Thahira Tasnim Abdul Aziz, Jasnina Jasmine Johan Johnson, Sharifah Aqilah Farhana Syed Ali, and Nur Durratul Sahira Yazit.

Asian Championships

Malaysia hosted the 6th Asian Pétanque Championship at Arena Petanque in Kuala Lumpur from 5-10 November 2025, drawing 141 participants from 15 countries, and the home team finished 4th overall with a six-medal haul across precision shooting and triples. In individual precision shooting, Nur Iman Aina Ahmad Sabti (women's, lost the final 27-22 to Indonesia's Anni Saputri) and 15-year-old Muhd Harith Muhaimin Hafaizul (junior) both took silver, while Muhd Nuzul Azwan Ahmad Temizi added bronze in the men's event. The team events added a silver in Junior Mixed Triples (Muhammad Aidil Zakri Junaidi, Muhammad Arsyad Muhammad Tajuddin, Nur Erissya Najwa Mohd Helmey, and Siti Noor Ellyshatul Balqish Suhaimi lost the final to Thailand A, 13-2) plus bronzes in Men's Triples (Mohd Muqri Arif Mohd Sapiny, Khairul Amirul Zamrulhisham, Muhd Idham Shahrulzahari, and Nuzul Azwan) and Women's Triples (Sharifah Aqilah Farhana Syed Ali, Nur Thahira Tasnim Abdul Aziz, Siti Asiah Zaini, and Nur Iman Aina Ahmad Sabti).

The 2026 World Championship Bid That Moved to Thailand

In November 2025, the Malaysian Boules Sports Federation announced it had been offered hosting rights for the 2026 FIPJP World Pétanque Championships (Men's and Junior Precision Shooting and Triples), with plans to run the tournament in mid-to-late September 2026 at Arena Petanque in Taman Pudu Ulu, Cheras, Kuala Lumpur - a venue built for the 2017 SEA Games with 24 indoor lanes and 8 outdoor lanes, and regarded as one of the finest dedicated pétanque facilities in the world. That plan did not go ahead: according to Germany's national pétanque federation, the organizer withdrew due to a lack of financial resources, and Khon Kaen University in Thailand stepped in as the new host, with the tournament now set for 20-24 November 2026. See our 2026 World Championship preview for the full story of the move and what's confirmed about the Thailand edition. Whether Malaysia gets another opportunity to host a future World Championship remains to be seen.

National Competition Calendar

MBSF, with support from the National Sports Council and corporate partners, runs the Kejohanan Boules Petanque Kebangsaan Malaysia (National Boules Pétanque Championship) as its flagship domestic event, alongside a dedicated youth edition, the Kejohanan Boules Petanque Remaja Kebangsaan (National Youth Boules Pétanque Championship). Arena Petanque also hosts the Malaysia International Petanque Doubles (MIPD), an invitational tournament that has run annually since 2024 and draws regional squads alongside the country's own top pairs. At the 3rd MIPD (8-10 May 2026), Thailand's Thanawan Toosewha and Phongsakron Ainpu - part of Thailand's overall-champion SEA Games squad - denied Malaysia's Mohd Nuzul Azwan and Mohd Shah Ismail a three-peat after the pair's back-to-back 2024 and 2025 titles, taking the RM20,000 top prize to the Malaysian duo's RM10,000 runner-up share.

Where to Play

Arena Petanque in Cheras remains the country's flagship venue, hosting national training camps and international competition alongside community play. Malaysia's competitive base has continued to grow around this facility since 2017, feeding the talent pipeline behind the country's recent SEA Games and Asian Championship medals.
