Pétanque in Bulgaria

Pétanque in Bulgaria is organized by the Bulgarian Petanque Federation (Българска федерация по петанк), based in Sofia. The sport has grown steadily since the mid-1990s from a single Sofia club into a nationwide network of clubs stretching from the Danube to the Black Sea coast, with an international resume that includes hosting a European Championship.

History

The first Bulgarian petanque club was founded in 1996 at the sports club "Akademik" in Sofia, predating any national organizing body. The Bulgarian Petanque Federation itself was established in 2000 under founding chairman Stefan Stamov. The following year, 2001, brought two milestones at once: the federation joined the World Pétanque Federation (FIPJP), and it received official licensing from Bulgaria's State Agency for Youth and Sports (the predecessor of today's Ministry of Youth and Sports). Bulgaria's first national championship was also held in 2001.

From its Sofia base, the sport spread to clubs in Varna, Burgas, Plovdiv, Belene, Kozloduy, Razgrad, Shabla, and Sevlievo, among other towns. Sofia's Izgrev district has been particularly closely tied to the sport's growth - its Akademik-Izgrev club is counted among the country's earliest and most active, and the district has hosted an annual open tournament for over two decades (its 21st edition ran in May 2023 in the grounds of the "G. S. Rakovski" Military Academy).

International Results

Bulgaria made its World Championship debut at the 41st World Championship in Brussels, Belgium, in 2005 - the same year its third national championship produced singles champion Nevelina Georgieva and a doubles/triples sweep by University Club pairing Georgi Burdarov and Yuliy Takov (joined by Hristina Yordanova for the triples title).

Bulgaria's highest-profile moments as a host came at the Black Sea resort town of Albena, which has staged the Confédération Européenne de Pétanque (CEP) Men's Triples European Championship twice - first in September 2015 (24-27 September), then again in 2019, when Albena additionally hosted the Triples Veterans European Championship (16-18 September) ahead of the Men's Triples and precision-shooting event (19-22 September). A first-hand account of the 2015 edition from the Scottish Pétanque Association put that field at 34 nations, with the top 24 finishers earning automatic qualification for the following year's World Championship; France won the main A competition, and Italy's Diego Rizzi won the individual precision-shooting event held alongside it. Greek player Louk Andrianos represented Greece at the 2019 edition, and both Jersey players who opened their 2026 CEP European Championships campaign in Lorca, Spain faced Bulgarian opponents in their first-round singles matches.

Governance Today

The federation is currently led by chairman Lyudmil Smukov and general secretary Stamat Uzunov, reachable at bulpetanque@abv.bg. It operates under sport license No. 98, issued 16 December 2020 by the Ministry of Youth and Sports under Bulgaria's Physical Education and Sport Act. Note: the petanque-world.com federation directory lists an older contact record naming Rumen Ratchev as president - that appears to be an outdated snapshot rather than the current leadership, since it conflicts with the federation's own actively maintained site, which consistently names Smukov as chairman across its governance and decisions pages.

The federation organizes a full domestic calendar including men's and women's triplettes championships, precision-shooting competitions, and a veterans' (55+) tournament series, alongside its club directory, licensed-referee registry, and a map of petanque court locations.

National Competition Calendar

The federation's own published 2026 annual sports calendar splits its ДП (Държавно Първенство, "State Championship") series into discipline-specific rounds spread across the year rather than a single national-championship weekend. Most rounds are staged in Sofia, with one round rotating to Polski Trambesh:

• Triples (men/women), round 1, and Precision Shooting, round 1: 2-3 May 2026, Sofia. Results for this round were already published by the federation on 20 June 2026, confirming the round went ahead as scheduled.
• Triples, round 2: 13-14 June 2026, Polski Trambesh, home of club Delta.
• Doubles (men, women, and mixed): 11-12 July 2026, Sofia.
• Triples, round 3, and Precision Shooting, round 2: 25-26 July 2026, Sofia.
• Singles (men/women): 1-2 August 2026, Sofia.
• National Club Championship: 26-27 September 2026, jointly in Sofia and with the Sports Club for People with Disabilities Alpha.
• Triples, Veterans (55+): 3-4 October 2026, Sofia.

The federation's calendar document is labeled a working draft (dated 23 April 2026), but the round 1 results already on record show the schedule has held in practice for at least that round.

As of the federation's most recently published club directory, Bulgaria has 15 registered clubs, concentrated in Sofia but reaching several other regions:
