Pétanque in Jersey

Pétanque is a well-established competitive sport on Jersey, the largest of the Channel Islands, governed by Pétanque Jersey (formerly known as the Jersey Pétanque Association, JPA). Despite the island's small size, its players compete internationally as a jurisdiction in their own right, and Jersey clubs have produced some of the strongest recent results of any Home Nations or European Cup for Clubs participant.

Federation

Pétanque Jersey was founded in 2004 and is affiliated to both the FIPJP and the CEP (Confédération Européenne de Pétanque). The island fielded its first team at the European Men's Triples Championship in 2013 and has competed in European competition every year since. The federation is run by a General Committee comprising a Chairman, Vice-Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer, Competitions Officer, Youth Development Officer, and Publicity Officer, alongside a representative from each affiliated club. As of the 2026 season, the committee is confirmed as Dave Ibitson (Chairman), Wendy Ritzema (Vice-Chairman), Elaine Paisnel (Secretary, previously honored by Jersey Sport as a "Volunteer of the Month"), Peter Pearce (Treasurer), Dawn Buckley (Competitions Officer), Robin Stockton (Youth Development/Safeguarding/Welfare Officer), and Mike Fennell (Publicity Officer).

Correction (2026-08-06): an earlier version of this profile stated that the Jersey Pétanque Club (jerseypetanque.org) was a separate, older organization distinct from the island's governing body. Cross-checking petanque.je's own "Where to Play" and clubs pages shows this is incorrect: Jersey Pétanque Club is in fact one of the federation's four affiliated clubs (see below), not a rival or unrelated body.

Domestic Scene

The federation counted 4 affiliated clubs and over 500 members at the end of 2021, and maintains an annual Pétanque Jersey Rankings table tracking competitive results across the season, including for 2026. The four affiliated clubs, per Pétanque Jersey's own "Where to Play" listings, are:

• Jersey Pétanque Club - based at Les Quennevais Sports Centre in St Brelade, founded in April 1986 (its first Honorary President was the naturalist Gerald Durrell), and with over 100 members it is the island's oldest and largest club.
• Carrefour Club - plays at Grouville Football Club's grounds, at the junction of La Rue du Boulivot and La Route de Franchville, having moved to that site in May 2021.
• St Mary's Pétanque Club - plays on a terrain behind St Mary's school.
• Liberation Pétanque Club - based at the Weighbridge Gardens in St Helier, popular with the island's Lunch Time League players, and the club most prominent on the international stage in recent years (see below).

International Results

Jersey competes in the annual Home Nations Championship alongside England, Scotland, and Wales, a fixture it has taken part in since 2016. In 2024, Jersey won the Home Nations title for the first time, edging out the host by 64 games to 62 to break England's long run atop the competition.

At club level, Liberation Pétanque Club won bronze in the Federation Cup at the European Cup for Clubs in both 2024 and 2025, repeating the achievement in back-to-back years. The 2025 edition (the 27th EuroCup) was held 6-9 November in Sin-le-Noble, France, drawing clubs from 31 European countries. Liberation Pétanque Club is set to represent Jersey again at the 2026 EuroCup for Clubs, also in Sin-le-Noble, in November.

Jersey sent four players, accompanied by coaches Rosie Boleat and Elaine Paisnel, to the 2026 CEP European Championships in Lorca, Spain (18-21 June 2026), competing in Men's Singles, Women's Singles, Mixed Doubles, Men's Doubles, and Women's Doubles. Nicky Maindonald, competing in Europe for the first time, won her opening Women's Singles game 13-8 against Bulgaria before beating Guernsey in a later round, and partnered Lorna Limbrick to a 12-10 third-round win over Finland in Women's Doubles. Toby Northern won his opening Men's Singles game 13-8 against Bulgaria, and partnered Andrew Bellamy-Burt to a third-round Men's Doubles win over Latvia. All four players also competed in the Nations Cup knockout stage.

National Competition Calendar

Pétanque Jersey publishes its own official yearly calendar of events on its website. The 2026 edition lists the following fixtures across its own JPA-run championships, an inter-club league, and the individual open tournaments run by its four affiliated clubs (see Domestic Scene above): Jersey Pétanque Club (JPC), Liberation Pétanque Club (LPC), Carrefour Club (CPC), and St Mary's Pétanque Club (SMPC).

• Men's & Women's Triples: 6 June, at LPC.
• Open Triples: 4 July, at CPC.
• Men's & Women's Doubles: 15 August, at JPC.

Alongside these championships, an Inter-Club League runs as a six-round competition contested weekly from 1 June through 6 July among the island's affiliated clubs.

• CPC Indoor Doubles Open: 24 January, at Home Farm, St John.
• LPC Doubles Open: 11 April, at LPC.
• CPC Open Doubles / Triples / Singles: 2, 3, and 4 May respectively, at CPC - a three-day event that Guernsey's own club calendar independently lists as the "Carrefour Open, 2-4 May 2026," an exact date match confirming both islands' own primary sources agree on this fixture.
• LPC Singles Open: 27 June, at LPC.
• LPC International Open Singles / Doubles / Triples: 24, 25, and 26 July respectively, at LPC - Guernsey's own club calendar separately lists this fixture as the "Liberation Open Jersey," but dates it one day later, 25-27 July; Pétanque Jersey's own calendar is treated as the authoritative source for its own club's event, with the one-day discrepancy noted here as a cross-referencing catch rather than silently resolved.

• Home Nations Championship: 8-9 August, Stirling, Scotland - Jersey's defense of the title it won for the first time in 2024 (see International Results above). The 2026 edition is hosted by the Scottish Pétanque Association at its new pistes within the grounds of Stirling County Rugby Club, independently confirmed via both the Scottish Pétanque Association's own site and local Stirling News coverage of the venue and its qualifying tournament.
• Guernsey Open: 4-6 September, Guernsey - cross-checked against Guernsey's own country profile, which independently confirms the identical 4-6 September dates for its host club's own marquee tournament, drawing entrants from the UK, France, and Jersey.
• CEP European Championship (Women's Triples): 8-11 October - Pétanque Jersey's own calendar names the host city as "Athens, Greece," but this site's own Greece country profile, sourced directly from the Hellenic federation's own event listings and independently corroborated there against Belgium's federation calendar, places the same 8-11 October Women's fixture (alongside a 3-6 October Juniors & Espoirs fixture) at the SPORTCAMP Athletic Training Center in Loutraki, a separate town roughly 80km from central Athens. This looks like the same imprecise-host pattern this site's own Serbia profile previously caught in a federation calendar's Kuala Lumpur/Khon Kaen World Championship listing: a national federation's own published calendar can carry an approximate or outdated host city even when its dates are correct. Loutraki is used here as the more precise host, sourced from the host federation's own listings rather than a visiting federation's calendar.
