Pétanque in Greece

In Greek, pétanque is known as edafosfairisi (εδαφοσφαίριση, literally "ground-ball"), a term confirmed across multiple independent Greek sources - including the sport's own Greek Wikipedia entry and club pages that pair the word directly with "Pétanque" in their titles - to mean the French boules game, not a different sport that happens to share a generic-sounding name. That disambiguation matters because "ground-ball" is exactly the kind of literal, non-obvious translation that could otherwise be confused with an unrelated activity.

Federation

The Ελληνική Ομοσπονδία Εδαφοσφαίρισης (Hellenic Federation of Edafosfairisi, HPF) was founded on 28 December 2021 and received Special Sports Recognition (Ειδική Αθλητική Αναγνώριση) from Greece's General Secretariat of Sports under decision ΓΓΑ/362155, dated 12 December 2023. The federation's nominal seat is the northwestern coastal city of Preveza, chosen for its own tradition in the sport, while its central branch is based in Athens - described in the federation's own materials as the "metropolis" of Greek edafosfairisi because of its concentration of long-established and newer clubs alike.

Update (2026-08-06): the relationship between these two bodies, left unresolved in an earlier version of this profile, is now confirmed: the Hellenic Petanque Federation was formed through a union with the older Hellenic Petanque Clubs Association (the body behind the Petanque Hellas portal) in October 2024, and since April 2025 the unified HPF has been the sole organization representing Greece internationally to the FIPJP and CEP. The Petanque Hellas portal at petanque-hellas.eu, whose own archives include a Chania winter tournament from 2016, remains listed as a federation contact point alongside hpf.gr rather than having been shut down outright. A current HPF president could not be independently verified via WebSearch alone.

A third, distinct organization also operates in the Greek pétanque scene: ΕΠΑΝΑΠΕΤ (Επιτροπή Ανάπτυξης Πετανκ, the "Pétanque Development Committee"), publishing as Hellas Pétanque at hellas-petanque.gr. It describes itself as a non-profit, informal association of clubs rather than a sports federation, aiming to connect players and clubs and help newcomers find a local club to join; it organized Greece's 1st Panhellenic Open Championship in 2019. It is not itself affiliated with FIPJP or CEP, but its club directory is one of the more complete lists of grassroots Greek pétanque clubs available.

Federation Contact

The HPF's own website lists its headquarters as the Δ.Α.Κ Π.ΦΑΛΗΡΟΥ (D.A.K. Palaio Faliro, the municipal athletic center of Palaio Faliro in the Athens riviera area), a contact email of info@hpf.gr, and a contact phone number of 6972698990. An older contact address, hellas.petanque@gmail.com, was published in earlier federation materials and may still reach the organization, though info@hpf.gr is the current listed address. The federation also maintains an official Facebook page and an Instagram account (@hellenic.petanque.federation).

Domestic Scene

Organized club play and tournaments have been documented in Chania (home to the Chania Petanque & Mölkky Club), several districts of Athens (including a petanque section at Esperos, the Panathlitikos Omilos Kallitheas), Kalamata, Corfu, Thessaloniki, and Preveza. As of the federation's own account, Thessaloniki alone counted five clubs, out of ten nationally, with roughly 200 registered athletes across the country - a snapshot rather than a fixed current figure, since club counts of this kind change from season to season. One notable club, Athens-based Atlantas, is a sports association for kidney patients and transplant recipients that includes edafosfairisi among its activities, an example of the sport's use in Greece beyond conventional competitive clubs.

The ΕΠΑΝΑΠΕΤ/Hellas Pétanque club directory lists a further spread of clubs across the country, including Panionios GSS and an Athletic Society Petanque of Palaio Faliro in the greater Athens area, a club in Marathon, SAA Vouliagmeni-Petanque on the Athens Riviera, Ilisos-PETA, Amazones Varis, a club known as Yuppi Camp, further clubs in Ptolemaida and at Ymittos (Saketa), one named Schedia, an Athletic Club of Petanque Piraeus, a club in Lefkada, and the Society of Friends of Ampali in Preveza - a genuine long-tail spread beyond the handful of larger clubs documented above.

Clubs & Where to Play

The Chania Petanque & Mölkky Club built Greece's first purpose-made pétanque venue, a seven-strip playing arena with spectator seating in Agios Apostolos Park, on the coast near Daratsos in Chania, Crete. Founded informally in 2009 and officially recognized in 2014, the club has grown to roughly 60 registered members and holds regular sessions on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons plus weekend afternoons from 3pm.

The Palaio Faliro Petanque Club plays out of a dedicated field in Flisvos Park (Πάρκο Φλοίσβου), on the Athens riviera, granted to the club by the municipality of Palaio Faliro. In Athens itself, the Mont Parnes team plays at Tritsis Park (Πάρκο Τρίτση), a large municipal park in the Peristeri/Ilion area, with a listed field contact of 210 813 5182 / 697 320 9978.

Beyond these three documented venues, comprehensive court locations and contact details for the rest of the country's clubs are not centrally published in one place; the ΕΠΑΝΑΠΕΤ/Hellas Pétanque club directory (hellas-petanque.gr) and the independent petanque.geo.gr fields listing are the most complete starting points for finding a specific club or court.

International Results

Update (2026-08-06): this section previously found no citable results; further research has now turned up several. Chania Petanque Club player Louk Andrianos represented Greece at the CEP European Championship in Albena, Bulgaria (September 2019), competing in men's precision shooting and men's triples alongside Antonis Glampedakis, Stavros Stavridis, and Christos Mavreas. Andrianos later finished 2nd at a national ranking tournament in Athens (Dafni, March 2022) to earn a place representing Greece in singles and mixed doubles at the FIPJP World Championship in Karlslunde, Denmark (May 2022). More recently, Greece ran national preselection tournaments ahead of the CEP European Championship Triples Men in Spain (May 2025), and the club Palaio Faliro PC represented Greece at the 27th CEP European Cup (2025). No specific placement or medal for Greece has been confirmed at any of these events via available sources - these are documented appearances, not results, and this section will be updated further if a citable final ranking is found.

National Competition Calendar

HPF publishes its upcoming domestic tournaments directly as dated event listings on its own site (hpf.gr), each carrying machine-readable start and end dates rather than a single downloadable season PDF. The confirmed remainder of the 2026 season:

Greece is hosting two legs of the 2026 CEP European Petanque Championship season at the SPORTCAMP Athletic Training Center in Loutraki, both confirmed directly via HPF's own event listings and independently corroborated by this site's own Belgium country profile, which tracks the same fixtures from its own federation's calendar:

• 3-6 October: European Petanque Championship (Juniors & Espoirs)
• 8-11 October: European Petanque Championship (Women)
