Pétanque in Hungary

Pétanque in Hungary is organized nationally by the Magyar Pétanque Szövetség (MAPESZ), the Hungarian Pétanque Federation, whose core mission is promoting the sport, uniting the country's petanque community, and organizing domestic competitions and championships.

History

MAPESZ was founded in 1989 in Magyarszék, a small village in Baranya county, where the federation's registered office remains today. Two years later, in 1991, it joined the Fédération Internationale de Pétanque et de Jeu Provençal (FIPJP), giving Hungarian players access to World and European Championship competition. Ágnes Kocsis-Simon serves as the federation's current president.

Nagy László's World Championship Silver: Hungary's First

Hungarian pétanque's biggest breakthrough came at the 2024 Men's World Championship in Dijon, France (5-8 December 2024), where László Nagy reached the final of the precision shooting event - the country's first-ever world championship medal in the sport. Nagy qualified directly into the top four after a strong first series (41 points), then beat Tunisia's Mohamed Khaled Bougriba 40-32 in the quarter-final before losing the final 46-32 to Madagascar's Jean-François Daniel Rakotondrainibé ("Zigle"), who was completing his own second individual world precision-shooting title. Federation president Ágnes Kocsis-Simon and coach Máté Varga both credited the result with raising the sport's domestic profile; Hungarian sports media described it as a milestone moment in the federation's history.

International Tournaments: The Gödöllő Grand Prix

MAPESZ organizes the Pétanque Magyar Nagydíj (Hungarian Grand Prix) at the Gödöllői Királyi Kastély (Gödöllő Royal Palace). The 2026 edition, held 9-10 May, drew Hungarian and international players from Belgium, Switzerland, Finland, France, Greece, Poland, Austria, and Serbia, including the Belgian and Swiss national U23 teams and Nagy László himself. We could not independently verify the 2026 edition's final results or podium placements from available sources.

National Competition Calendar

MAPESZ runs its domestic season from spring through summer each year, with entries managed through the federation's online center. The 2026 calendar includes the EB Doubles selection competition on 21 March, the Team Championship first round on 16 May in Pécs and final on 13 June in Badacsonytomaj, the Adult Mixed Doubles Championship on 4 July in Tatabánya, and the Shooting Championship (tir de précision) on 5 July in Szomód. The 2026 Team Championship saw a notable first-time run from Veszprémi Egyetemi Atlétikai Club (VEDAC), competing in the national team system for the first time with a squad of Áron Tóth, Imre Muraközy, Rita Bukodi, Bíborka Rózsa, Zoltán Bukodi, Ambrus Szilveszter Korbel, and Barna Timmer. After losing to top-seeded Budapest Pétanque Sportegyesület 22-9 in the group stage, VEDAC beat PVSK's second team 23-8 to advance as group runner-up into the round of eight, where they met PVMSK at the 13 June final in Badacsonytomaj. We could not independently verify the result of that match or VEDAC's final placement from available sources.

Clubs & Where to Play

Hungarian pétanque activity centers on two main hubs. In the capital, Budapest Pétanque Sportegyesület (BPSE), founded in 2018, promotes the sport across Budapest and publishes official MAPESZ rankings and venue information for local players. On Lake Balaton, the Balaton Sportegyesület in Szigliget runs a dedicated pétanque section, founded with 15 members and led by section head Martina Szakos under club president Rita Havasi. Additional clubs are affiliated with MAPESZ across the country, listed on the federation's own member-organization directory.

Veszprém's VEDAC club has also produced two of the national team's youth players: Imre Muraközy and Áron Tóth, both from Veszprém Honvéd SE and pétanque players for nearly five years, represented Hungary at the Hope Men's and Women's European Championship in Benejúzar, Spain (2-5 October 2025) under coach Fabien Bernard Clerc, following two domestic youth doubles titles.

The Centrope Cup

Hungary is one of the participating nations in the Centrope Cup, a recurring Central European pétanque tour open to any player holding a license from a FIPJP-recognized federation, alongside Czechia, Austria, Poland, and Slovakia, with Slovenia also fielding a team. Hungary has hosted legs of the tour at Szigliget on Lake Balaton, where a 2017 edition drew 126 players in 42 teams from 7 countries.
