Pétanque in the Czech Republic

Pétanque has a small but well-organized following in the Czech Republic (also known as Czechia), run by the Česká asociace pétanque klubů (ČAPEK), the Czech Association of Pétanque Clubs. The federation traces its roots to a single tournament in the early 1990s and has since built international ties, a European Championship medal, and a recurring Central European competition circuit.

History

ČAPEK grew out of the first Czech pétanque tournament, held in Ratibořice in 1994, which brought together the sport's earliest local clubs. The association itself was founded that same year in Třebíč, with its statutes formally registered on 18 January 1995. The founding clubs were PQC Ratibořice (which later became HP Třebíč), První oddíl pétanque (POP) Praha, and Třetí oddíl pétanque (TOP) Orlová. Pavel Lukeš of POP Praha served as ČAPEK's first president, with Karel Dohnal as first secretary.

International recognition followed quickly: ČAPEK joined the Fédération Internationale de Pétanque et de Jeu Provençal (FIPJP) in 1995, then the Confédération Européenne de Pétanque (CEP) in 1999, the same year it was accepted into the Český svaz tělesné výchovy (ČSTV), now known as the Czech Union of Sport.

Governance Today

Since 2016, ČAPEK has operated as the pétanque section of the Česká federace kulových sportů (ČFKS), the Czech Federation of Ball Sports, which also oversees raffa and lyonnaise (jeu provençal) in the country. Petr Stoklásek led the federation as president from 2009 to 2022, when Jindřich Kauca succeeded him, with Tomáš Michálek serving as secretary.

ČAPEK operates today as the pétanque section of the ČFKS, based at Zátopkova 100/2, p.o. box 40, 169 00 Praha 6 - the Strahov sports complex shared by many Czech national sports federations. International Results

The Czech national team's best result to date came at the 2007 European Pétanque Championship in Ankara, Turkey, where the Czech women's team - Alis Hancova, Lucie Klusova, Hana Srubarova, and Romana Vokrouhlikova - won the silver medal. Czech representatives, including junior squads, have continued to compete regularly at FIPJP and CEP-organized European and World Championships since.

The Centrope Cup

The Czech Republic is one of the anchor nations in the Centrope Cup, a recurring Central European pétanque tour open to any player holding a license from a FIPJP-recognized federation. The 2025/26 season features tournaments across Czechia, Austria, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia, with Slovenia also fielding a team in the standings. As of the latest published rankings, Slovenia leads the overall table, with the Czech Republic in second place, ahead of Austria, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia. National Competition Calendar

ČAPEK/ČFKS runs its full domestic season through an online tournament and results application, covering nine annual national championship categories - men's, women's, juniors, 55+, singles, doubles, triples, mixed, and precision shooting (tir de précision) - alongside the regional qualifying tournaments that feed into them and into the Centrope Cup circuit.

Clubs & Where to Play

Beyond the founding clubs in Třebíč, Prague, and Orlová, the Czech scene includes clubs such as FRAPECO Praha and Carreau Brno, with PCBD Brno having represented the country at international tournaments. In Prague, casual and organized play can be found at Letenský zámeček in Letná park - which can also host managed tournaments for up to 60 players - and at Rajská zahrada, a park in the Žižkov district.
