Pétanque in the United States

Pétanque in the United States has evolved from a niche pastime of French immigrants into a thriving national sport with a dedicated and growing community. Managed by the Federation of Pétanque USA (FPUSA), the American scene combines traditional competitive play with a modern "pétanque-bar" culture that is introducing the game to a new generation.

History of American Pétanque

The sport first established roots in the U.S. during the late 1950s and 1960s, primarily on the coasts:

1959: La Boule d'Or was founded in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park by Jean Bontemps, making it one of the first official clubs in the country.
1968: La Boule New Yorkaise was established by artist Alfred Levitt. It remains the oldest active club in New York City, famously hosting games in Central Park and Bryant Park.
1987: The modern governing body, FPUSA, was formed through a merger of existing regional organizations to provide a unified national structure and affiliation with the FIPJP.

The Federation (FPUSA)

The Federation of Pétanque USA is the official governing body and a member of the International Federation (FIPJP), and one of the most active members of the Pan-American Petanque Confederation alongside Canada and Mexico. It is organized into seven geographic regions:

Pétanque Amelia Island Open

Held each November in Fernandina Beach, Florida, the Amelia Island Open is the largest and most prestigious pétanque tournament in the Americas, drawing close to 400 players (around 124 team slots) including world-class professionals from France, Belgium, and Madagascar. Organized by Petanque America and hosted by the Amelia Island Pétanque Club, the 2025 edition was put on hiatus while the host site's waterfront park underwent a $2.1 million reconstruction; the tournament returned as scheduled in November 2026.

National Championships

The FPUSA organizes annual National Championships for Triples, Doubles, and Singles. These events rotate through different regions, showcasing the diversity of American terrains and clubs. The U.S. Men's Triples squad also competes internationally: after winning the Men's Triples World Championship Qualifier in Sanford, Florida in May 2025, the team - captain Ziggy Kessouagni, pointer Fouad Lahnoune, shooter Hassan Lakhdar, and veteran Christian Cazenave - secured its place on the 2026 USA Men's Triples World Championship team.
