Pétanque in Argentina

Argentina governs pétanque - locally "petanca" - through the Confederación Argentina de Bochas (CAB), a multi-discipline body covering bochas, petanca, raffa volo, and zerbín together, the same governance pattern already documented on this site for Italy, Croatia, Chile, and Paraguay. Unlike some of those neighbors, Argentina's petanca program is already competitive at the top of Pan American play: the national team has qualified for the last two Men's Triples World Championships, taking silver at the 2023 Pan American qualifier in Chile.

History

Bochas reached Argentina with Spanish colonizers as early as the 17th century, and continued to be played - reportedly even after a 1783 colonial-era ban - through informal and immigrant club networks for well over a century. The sport was given a formal national structure on 1 March 1929, when the Federación Argentina de Bochas was founded in the Capital Federal (Buenos Aires) to regulate play and standardize courts. That federation was succeeded by the modern Confederación Argentina de Bochas, whose social contract dates to 13 April 1954; CAB is affiliated with the Argentine Olympic Committee - Argentine Sports Confederation (Comité Olímpico Argentino - Confederación Argentina de Deportes) and oversees a network of provincial federations, including the Federación de Bochas de la Provincia de Córdoba, one of its most active affiliates. Petanca specifically has grown within that older bochas structure rather than as a standalone import: clubs such as the Asociación Río Cuarto de Bochas, founded in 1937 in Córdoba province, trace their own histories back nearly as far as the national federation itself.

International Results

Argentina's clearest breakthrough in petanca came at the Panamericano de Petancas Limache 2023, held 6-10 December 2023 in Chile - the inaugural Pan American pétanque qualifying tournament for the 2024 World Championship, already documented on this site's Chile profile. A round-robin group stage sent Argentina through to the final against Canada, where Argentina's squad of Pedro "Pueblo" Sánchez, Pablo Apez, Guillermo Montemerlo, and Nicolás Pretto beat the United States 13-5 in the semifinal before losing the final to Canada 13-5, taking silver and a qualifying berth to the 2024 World Championship in Dijon, France - a tournament this site's World Championship history records as won by Italy, with Madagascar as runner-up. At Dijon, Argentina's Swiss-system campaign (fielding Néstor Guevara, Guillermo Montemerlo, and Pedro Sánchez) went two wins and three losses - beating Austria 13-6 and Poland 13-6, but losing to Tunisia 13-2, Sweden 13-4, and Canada 13-12 - finishing 30th of 48 teams and missing the knockout rounds.

Argentina returned to Pan American qualifying at the Panamericano Clasificatorio de Petancas Iquique 2025, held 5-7 November 2025 in Chile. There, a trio of Ezequiel Pereyra, Juan Roldán, and Néstor Guevara beat Mexico 13-0 to take the third and final qualifying spot for that year's Men's Triples World Championship (the top two finishers were not independently confirmed via available sources) - originally reported for Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, but since moved to Khon Kaen, Thailand, running 20-24 November 2026; see this site's 2026 World Championship preview for the full story of that venue switch. Pereyra, who plays out of Club Sportivo Maipú in Río Cuarto, Córdoba, described his path to the national team as running through neighborhood clay courts rather than any high-performance academy.

Federation

The Confederación Argentina de Bochas is headquartered in Buenos Aires and organizes its member clubs through provincial federations across the country, including the Federación de Bochas de la Provincia de Córdoba. A current CAB president could not be independently verified via available sources as of this writing - Raúl Quirós held the role as of 2022, with Elvio Ceballos reported as a newer vice president since - so it is left unstated here rather than guessed.
