Pétanque in Chile

Pétanque in Chile is organized under the Federación Chilena de Bochas (FECHIBO), a multi-discipline boules federation founded in 1945 that governs bocha sudamericana, bocha zerbín (raffa-volo), and pétanque side by side. Unlike a single-sport national federation, FECHIBO runs a dedicated pétanque rulebook alongside its other disciplines - the same umbrella-federation structure already documented on this site for Italy and Croatia - and has used that structure to host two Pan American pétanque qualifying tournaments in the Valparaíso region since 2023.

History

FECHIBO was founded on 21 October 1945, with Dante Lépori as its first president, to coordinate the boules clubs that had sprung up in Santiago and across Chile's provinces - a sport whose roots in the country trace to Italian and Yugoslav immigrant communities. The federation is affiliated nationally with the Chilean Olympic Committee and internationally with the Confederación Panamericana de Bochas (CPB), the Confederazione Boccistica Internazionale (CBI), and pétanque's world governing body.

Pétanque sits alongside bocha sudamericana and bocha zerbín as one of FECHIBO's official competitive disciplines, each with its own published rulebook - a structural detail worth noting because a casual search for Chilean boules quickly surfaces the raffa/volo side of the federation's work first. Current president Pablo Muñoz Palma, who came to the sport through the Italian Circle in Villa Alemana, has spoken publicly about aligning Chile's pétanque competitions with international regulations and pushing for a stronger Chilean presence at tournaments abroad; he also sits on the World Discipline Commission for bochas.

International Tournaments Hosted

Chile's Valparaíso-region clubs have hosted back-to-back Pan American pétanque qualifiers:

Panamericano de Petancas Limache 2023 ran 6-10 December 2023 at the Bochódromo of Limache's Municipal Stadium, drawing eight nations - Argentina, Canada, Chile, the United States, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, and the Dominican Republic - to a men's triples competition (7-8 December) that doubled as qualification for the 2024 World Championship in France, followed by a doubles/pairs weekend (9-10 December) including the Open Alfredo Gutiérrez Salas, a 34-team pairs tournament. In the triples qualifier, a round-robin group stage sent Canada and Argentina through to the final, with the United States, the Dominican Republic, host Chile, and Mexico contesting a repechaje for the remaining places. Canada beat Argentina 13-5 in the final, sending Argentina through to Dijon 2024 as the confederation's second qualifier.

Panamericano Clasificatorio de Petancas Iquique 2025 followed almost two years later, held 5-7 November 2025 in Iquique and organized by the Bochas Iquique and Sportiva Italiana de Iquique clubs together with the Municipality of Iquique. Ten nations entered the men's triples field - host Chile, Canada, the United States, Mexico, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, Bolivia, Paraguay, Peru, and Argentina - competing for three qualifying places at that year's Men's Triples World Championship. Argentina's trio of Ezequiel Pereyra, Juan Roldán, and Néstor Guevara beat Mexico 13-0 to claim the third and final qualifying spot; the full top-two result was not independently confirmed. Chile has also hosted CIEP-FIPJP coaching education on home soil: a Formación de Técnicos de Petancas course ran 13-15 November 2025 at Club Humanitaria in Santiago, taught by French CIEP instructor Claude Raluy and closed out with Pan America Confederation president Frank Guzmán and FECHIBO president Pablo Muñoz Palma, certifying candidates from Chile, Canada, and Paraguay to the FIPJP/CIEP Level 1 diploma.

Clubs & Where to Play

Club Humanitaria (L'Umanitaria), the Santiago club that hosted the 2025 CIEP-FIPJP coaching course, plays out of the historic Italian community building at Av. Vicuña Mackenna 83, a few blocks from Plaza Italia. The building has housed L'Umanitaria - formally the Società di Mutuo Soccorso Italia, a mutual aid society founded by Italian immigrants (many from Genoa) in the late 19th century to support newly arrived compatriots - since 1954; its bochas and petanca section remains active today as one of Santiago's main venues for the sport.

In Iquique, far to the north, pétanque is played at the Bochódromo built on the grounds of the former Estadio Cavancha, a football stadium that hosted Deportes Iquique until its 1993 closure and sat largely abandoned before being revitalized as a dedicated boules facility. The Bochódromo has eight courts split evenly between the zerbín and petanca disciplines, and hosted the 2024 national club championship, which drew 11 clubs from eight cities across four regions of Chile. Two Iquique clubs, Club de Bochas Iquique and Sportiva Italiana de Iquique, jointly organized that 2024 national final on home ground and, together with the Municipality of Iquique, co-organized the 2025 Pan American qualifier described above.

Sportiva Italiana de Iquique is a distinct club from the older, unrelated Societá Sportiva Italiana de Valparaíso - founded in 1917 by Valparaíso and Viña del Mar's Italian community and still active today - which has its own significant place in Chilean bochas history: it won the 2024 national club title, and two of its members, Domingo Aste and Sebastián Zunino, were instrumental in FECHIBO's founding in 1945. The two "Sportiva Italiana" clubs share a naming tradition common to Chile's Italian-immigrant sporting societies rather than a direct organizational link.

National Competition Calendar

FECHIBO publishes a single combined "Calendario Campeonatos Bochas Temporada 2026" (last updated 30 March 2026) covering all three of its disciplines, zerbín, bocha sudamericana, and petanca, in one season-long grid rather than a pétanque-only document - the same multi-discipline calendar pattern already documented on this site for Turkey and Croatia. Picking out only the rows the grid itself labels "Petancas" (or the combined "Zerbín + Petanca"), the remaining pétanque fixtures on FECHIBO's 2026 season are:

• 6 September: club tournament (name still to be confirmed on FECHIBO's grid) organized by Italo Chileno de Limache, petanca discipline, at Limache
• 13 September: the "Pablo Soto" tournament organized by Bochas Quilpué, petanca doubles (parejas), venue still to be confirmed

FECHIBO's own grid carries a standard disclaimer that listed dates and formats "pueden sufrir cambios y modificaciones" (may change), so these club-level fixtures, several months out and still short a confirmed name or venue in FECHIBO's own document, should be read as provisional rather than final.

South American Games 2026 (ODESUR)

The largest pétanque fixture on Chile's 2026 calendar sits outside FECHIBO's own domestic season entirely: the XIII Juegos Suramericanos (South American Games) Santa Fe 2026, where bochas returns as a full medal sport after debuting at the inaugural 2006 South American Games in Buenos Aires. FECHIBO's own grid lists a broad 12-18 September 2026 window for the event at "Santa Fe-Argentina," spanning zerbín, raffa-volo, and petanca. Two independent Argentine local-news sources (unosantafe.com.ar and vecinosdelacosta.com), plus the Games' own organizing structure, narrow that to the actual on-field competition dates: bochas plays 13-17 September 2026 at the Estación Belgrano venue in the city of Santa Fe, on six purpose-assembled regulation courts, with petanca run alongside punto raffa-volo, bochas volo, and precision shooting as the specific disciplines contested - both local sources describe these as "international" modalities distinct from the raffa-and-arrime style more commonly played in Argentine domestic bochas. The broader XIII Juegos Suramericanos run 12-26 September 2026 across Santa Fe, Rosario, and Rafaela, with more than 4,000 athletes from 15 countries competing across 43 sports.

Chile has qualified petanca athletes for regional competition through the Limache (2023) and Iquique (2025) Pan American qualifiers documented above, but a confirmed start list naming which Chilean athletes will represent the country in the petanca discipline specifically at Santa Fe was not available as of this writing. This section will be updated once FECHIBO publishes a Games squad list and once results from Santa Fe are known.
