Lorraine's First Marseillaise Champion
Joe Casale made regional history at just 17 years old, becoming the first player from Lorraine to win the Mondial la Marseillaise a Petanque, the sport's largest annual open tournament, played each July at Marseille's Parc Borély. Formed at ALNM Petanque Neuves-Maisons in Meurthe-et-Moselle, he had joined the elite senior squad of Team Toro Petanque that same season.
2019: A Breakthrough Alongside Patrick Messonnier
Casale's title came at the 58th Mondial la Marseillaise a Petanque in 2019, playing as a teenage teammate to veteran pointer Patrick Messonnier alongside fellow 17-year-old Adrien Delahaye. The trio beat Simon Cortes, Christophe Bacchin and Alain Adell 13-8 in the final on the Mucem esplanade, with Casale scoring the final two points. Regional broadcaster France 3 covered the win as a landmark moment for petanque in Lorraine, noting that no player from the region had previously won the tournament. This site's own Patrick Messonnier profile documents the same result independently, crediting it as the second of Messonnier's three career Marseillaise titles, after 2015.
European Junior Precision Shooting Champion, 2018
A year before his Marseillaise breakthrough, Casale won the 2018 European Junior Precision Shooting Championship (tir de précision), the discipline in which players are scored on hitting stationary target boules from set distances. The title came at the European Championships in Almerimar, Spain, in October 2018, where he also set a European junior shooting record; Adrien Delahaye bettered it by one point, with 61, in April 2019. The result marked him as one of the country's most promising junior prospects heading into the 2019 season.
Recruited to Team Toro Petanque
For the 2019 season, a few months before his Marseillaise win, Casale was recruited to Team Toro Petanque, the competitive squad built around JP Rumilly in Haute-Savoie, where he trained under the mentorship of his 2019 winning teammate, Patrick Messonnier - the club Messonnier has represented for roughly eight years and the same project behind the Toro Petank boules brand Messonnier co-founded in 2016. By the 2025 season, RanKings Petanque's player registry lists him with Petanq Club de la Vierge in the Vosges.
Playing Style
Casale is a shooter (tireur). France 3 reported that Patrick Messonnier deliberately built his 2019 Marseillaise team around two young shooters, Casale and Adrien Delahaye, a role consistent with Casale's European junior precision-shooting title the year before.

Legacy
Joe Casale's 2019 Marseillaise title, won as a 17-year-old alongside fellow teenager Adrien Delahaye and veteran Patrick Messonnier, remains a landmark result for petanque in Lorraine, a region with a far smaller competitive footprint than the sport's traditional strongholds in Provence and the south of France. Combined with a European junior precision-shooting title the year before, it marked him as one of French petanque's notable young talents of the late 2010s, one whose path led from a Meurthe-et-Moselle club team directly into Patrick Messonnier's own Haute-Savoie project.
