Mondial La Marseillaise à Pétanque 2026: Results and Recap

The world's biggest pétanque tournament crowned a new champion this year. Patrick Messonnier, alongside Michel Loy and Yohan Cousin, won the 65th edition of the Mondial La Marseillaise à Pétanque, beating Patrick Laur, Sony Even and Sébastien Rousseau 13-5 in the final on Wednesday, 8 July 2026, at Marseille's Parc Borély. It was Messonnier's third Marseillaise title, while Loy and Cousin lifted the trophy for the first time.

Open to licensed and unlicensed players of all levels, the Mondial doubles as a festival as much as a competition, spreading play across dozens of courts throughout the city for a full week every July.

Men's Main Competition: Messonnier Claims a Third Title

Messonnier, Loy and Cousin needed a little over an hour and nine ends to see off Laur's side in a one-sided final, closing it out 13-5. The result gave Messonnier a third Marseillaise crown to add to his career record, while it was a maiden win for both Loy and Cousin. Laur's team, completed by Even and Rousseau, reached the final after an "incredible comeback" in the semi-final against the defending champion, Rakotoarisoa, who fell just short of retaining the title.

Notable Upsets Along the Way

The knockout rounds produced several shocks among the tournament's higher-profile names, several of whom feature in our player profiles:

• Dylan Rocher, playing with Mickaël Bonetto and Stéphane Robineau, had been named among the favorites but was eliminated in the round of 16, losing an "epic" match played in blazing heat to the Perrot triplette, 13-11.
• Marco Foyot advanced as far as the round of 16 - beating Casubolo 13-5 in the previous round - before also bowing out at that stage.
• Tyson Molinas, teaming with Eric Petit-Jean and Kevin Malbec, lost to the Coudène triplette 13-9, also in the round of 16.
• Philippe Suchaud and Damien Hureau, playing together with Julien Lamour, opened with an emphatic 13-1 win before falling in the second round to the team of Yoann Francone and Fernand Molinas, 8-13.
• Claudy Weibel formed a "Franco-Belgian alliance" with 2016 Marseillaise champion Didier Chagneau and shooter Logan Baton, winning a tense sixth-round match 13-8 before the trio's run ended in the round of 32, losing 13-6 to the team of Fery.

Grand Prix Féminin Paprec: Baussian Wins the Women's Title

In the tournament's women's competition, the Grand Prix Féminin Paprec, Nadège Baussian and Aurélie Bories' triplette defeated the Lovet team 13-8 to take the title.

Handi Mondial: Coppola Triumphs in Its Sixth Edition

Now in its sixth edition, the Handi Mondial brings players with all types of disabilities together at the Marseillaise. This year's final saw the Coppola triplette - completed by Sajero and Ayad - beat the Santiago team 11-7 for the title.

A Tournament with Six Decades of History

The Mondial traces its roots to July 1962, when journalist Michel Montana, backed by pastis entrepreneur Paul Ricard, organized the first edition at Parc Borély under the banner of La Marseillaise newspaper. That inaugural tournament drew 388 triplettes, or 1,164 players. Sixty-four years later, the 2026 edition's 4,832 triplettes represent more than twelve times that turnout, cementing the Mondial's status as the biggest pétanque tournament on the planet - larger even than the FIPJP World Championship, which is contested by national teams rather than open to all comers.
