Khaled Bougriba is one of Tunisian pétanque's most durable international competitors, with a Mediterranean Games record stretching back to his debut at Almería, Spain, in 2005 - two decades before he stood on top of the podium at the 2025 World Games. Career Overview

Bougriba's international career began at the 2005 Mediterranean Games in Almería, Spain, where he won bronze in an individual event on his Games debut. He returned to the Mediterranean podium at the 2013 Games in Mersin, Turkey, partnering Khaled Lakhal in men's doubles: the Tunisian pair eliminated a highly fancied French team before losing 7-13 to Italy in the final for silver. Nearly a decade later, at the 2022 Games in Oran, Algeria, he reached the final of individual precision shooting again, this time losing to Turkey's İbrahim Arslantaş, with Algeria's Mohamed Ouaghlissi taking bronze.

Bougriba's first FIPJP World Championship medal came at the 50th World Pétanque Championship in Cotonou, Benin, in September 2023, where he won silver in the individual/tête-à-tête event - beating Cambodia's Sin Vong 13-11 along the way - in the same championship at which Béji won the women's individual title.

Bougriba's finest individual title followed a few months later, at the 2024 African Championship in Marrakech, Morocco. He beat Cameroon's Charles Mbenoun 40-27 in the individual precision shooting final for gold, with Ivory Coast's Ibrahim Atano and Benin's Marcel Gbétablé sharing bronze; Tunisia's men's team took silver behind champions Senegal at the same championship. Later that year, at the 51st World Championship in Dijon, France, in December 2024, he anchored a Tunisian Triplette alongside Majdi Hammami, Sofien Ben Brahim and Lassaad El May that won four of five group matches (beating Finland, Lebanon, Cambodia and Argentina, losing only to France) before advancing through Malaysia, Madagascar, Germany and Luxembourg to the semifinal, where the run ended against eventual champions Italy. It was Tunisia's first World Championship Triplette medal in years.

Bougriba's landmark achievement came at the 2025 World Games in Chengdu, China. Partnering Mouna Béji in Mixed Petanque Classic Doubles, the pair beat Italy 13-5 in the semifinal before edging Thailand 10-9 in the final on 17 August - Tunisia's second gold of the Games, after Béji's individual precision shooting win, and together the country's first-ever World Games gold medals in any sport. Bougriba also competed in Men's Precision Shooting at the same Games, finishing fourth after Thailand's Ratchata Khamdee beat him 44-32 in the third-place match.

Bougriba returned to the African Championship podium the following year. At the 2025 edition in Nouakchott, Mauritania, on 29 November, he anchored a Tunisian Triplette with Karem Ben Hmida, Yassine Chelli and Haythem Skandrani, coached by Brahim Ayari, that beat the Comoros 13-3 in the quarterfinal, Senegal 13-3 in the semifinal, and Congo 13-8 in the final for gold. In the individual precision shooting event at the same championship, Bougriba won silver, losing the final to Mauritania's Amadou Traoré - unable to retain the title he had won in Marrakech the year before.

At the 2026 Mediterranean Games in Taranto, Italy, Bougriba had spoken publicly beforehand about his ambition for a fourth Mediterranean medal, expressing disappointment that mixed doubles - his most successful event with Béji - was not on the program. The Games did not go his way: in individual precision shooting he lost the small final 40-25 to France's Yohan Cousin, and in men's doubles, partnering Majdi Hammami, he lost the bronze-medal match 11-9 to the French pairing of Cousin and Christophe Sarrio, finishing fourth in both events.
