Yohan Cousin is the player who turned French pétanque's usual career arc upside down. He first appeared at a French Championship in 2007 and spent well over a decade as a solid but unremarkable national-circuit competitor, then compressed the biggest results of his life into four seasons in his thirties: Mediterranean Games gold at 31, a first French title at 33, a Masters de Pétanque crown and a European Championship silver at 34, and, at 35, the Mondial La Marseillaise à Pétanque plus two more European medals.

French pétanque media call him "le complet" - the complete player - and no federation source lists him with a fixed position. He points, shoots and holds a line in the middle depending on what a triplette needs, which is precisely why selectors keep finding room for him: he is the player who fits whichever slot is open. Sportmag summarized his role in the 2026 Marseillaise final as being "ready to plug every gap," and he ended that same final with a carreau to win the trophy.

Mediterranean Games Gold, 2022

Cousin's first major international title came at the 19th Mediterranean Games in Oran, Algeria, held 25 June to 5 July 2022. Partnering Lucas Desport in men's doublette, he produced a flawless tournament: 12-3 over Tunisia and 15-4 over Turkey in qualifying, 13-0 against Monaco to reach the semifinals, and a semifinal win over Italy that guaranteed a medal. In the final against Morocco the French pair fell 4-0 behind before turning the match around to win 13-5. It was the very first gold medal of the Games for the entire French delegation, across all 24 sports.

A First French Title, 2024

Two years later Cousin won his first French Championship. At Saint-Yrieix-sur-Charente over the weekend of 31 August to 1 September 2024, he partnered his ESM Gonfreville-l'Orcher clubmate Michel Loy to the men's doublette title, beating Delson Boulanger and Sonny Prud'homme 13-7 in the final. The pair had survived one of the tournament's tightest quarterfinals along the way, hauling themselves level at 8-8 with a five-carreau end.

For Loy, then 57, it was a doublette title won 34 years after his first, in 1990. For Cousin it was the result that changed his standing in the sport: it put him on the French selectors' shortlist for the first time and, in the words of Sportmag, "marked the start of Yohan Cousin's climb toward the summit of French pétanque."

2025: Europe, Then the Masters

France's national coach Jean-Claude Boiron named Cousin to the squad for the 2025 European Championship at Santa Susanna, Spain (17-20 July 2025) - a selection the French press openly called a surprise. Boiron justified it by pointing to the Oran gold: "Yohan Cousin took part in the Mediterranean Games, a competition he won with Lucas Desport. This will be his first European Championship, so he will be able to benefit from international experience."

He arrived as the fourth man in a squad completed by pointer Ludovic Montoro, milieu Ligan Doerr and shooter Mickaël Bonetto, and left with a silver medal: France reached the men's triplette final and lost 13-7 to a German team anchored by Matthias Laukart, whose win was Germany's first major adult international title in more than 40 years.

Cousin then collected the biggest domestic prize of his career to that point. Playing for Team Bonetto on the Masters de Pétanque tour alongside Bonetto, Montoro and Christophe Sarrio, he produced a spectacular carreau to win the team the Levallois stage, and the side went on to take the Final Four at La Talaudière, beating a strong Madagascar team 13-4 in the decider. It was a third Masters title for Bonetto and Montoro, a second for Sarrio, and a first for Cousin - who sat on the bench for the final itself, the fourth man in a rotation whose value the tour's own report acknowledged.

2026: Collectif France, Lorca and Marseille

When the FFPJP announced its Collectif France for 2026 under new sporting director Didier Choupay, it named only seven players. Cousin was one of them, alongside Dylan Rocher, Henri Lacroix, Jean Feltain, Bonetto, Sarrio and Montoro. Notable names left out of the shortened list included the 2025 French triplette champion Ligan Doerr and Stéphane Robineau.

At the 2026 European Championship in Lorca, Spain (18-21 June 2026), Cousin medaled twice despite falling ill as soon as he arrived. Paired with Bonetto in men's doublette, he lost 11-13 to Italy in the semifinal and took bronze; paired with Charlotte Darodes in mixed doublette, he went 5-0 through qualifying before losing the final 13-12 to Italy's Jacopo Gardella and Sara Ferrera - the closest final of the championship. Three weeks later came the title that defined his season. At the 65th Mondial La Marseillaise à Pétanque, Cousin joined Michel Loy and Patrick Messonnier and won the world's largest pétanque competition, beating Patrick Laur, Sony Even and Sébastien Rousseau 13-5 in the final on 8 July 2026 at Marseille's Parc Borély. It was Messonnier's third Marseillaise star and a first for both Loy and Cousin. Cousin was named the best player of the final, and finished it himself: with Laur's side unable to convert, he only had to land a carreau, and did. The following week at Nice (18-19 July 2026), Cousin reached the French Triplette Mixte final with Loy and Clarys Dumesnil, losing 5-13 to Dylan Rocher, Diego Rizzi and Catherine Jeanroy - see our 2026 French Championships recap.

At the 2026 Mediterranean Games in Taranto that August, Cousin added two more Games medals to the doublette gold he won in Oran back in 2022. In men's precision shooting, an individual event, he scored 37 in qualifying, then 57 in the repechage rounds before losing 43-50 to Spain's Manuel Luque González in the semifinal; he came back to beat Tunisia's Khaled Bougriba 40-25 in the small final for bronze. He then partnered Christophe Sarrio in men's doubles: the pair lost 6-10 to Italy's Andrea Chiapello and Diego Rizzi in the semifinal, but recovered to beat Tunisia's Mohamed Khaled Bougriba and Majdi Hammami 11-9 in the bronze-medal match - a third career Games medal for Cousin, and his second of these Games alone. Playing Style

Cousin's value is versatility rather than specialization. Across his major results he has been used as the fourth man in a national triplette, as a doublette partner in both men's and mixed formats, and as the finisher in a Marseillaise final - roles that demand different skills from one match to the next. Sportmag's assessment after Lorca and Marseille was that his "progression, freshness and consistency now demonstrated at the highest level" had made him one of the pillars of the French national setup rather than a rotation option. No manufacturer has publicly confirmed which boules brand or model he competes with.

Legacy

Cousin's career is a useful corrective to the assumption that elite pétanque players are identified young. He played 11 French Championships across nearly two decades before winning one, and his international breakthrough came at 31. What followed - Mediterranean gold, a French title, a Masters crown, three European medals and a Marseillaise - arrived in the space of four seasons, largely because selectors and captains kept finding that a player without a fixed position was the easiest one to build a team around.
