Pétanque in Guinea

Guinea (Conakry) is one of the African nations that regularly sends teams to continental pétanque events. Its national team has played at the African championships since at least 2011, and in 2026 its doubles pair won the West African zone championship in Abidjan. At home, the national boules and pétanque championship ends each year with a final in Conakry.

Federation and Continental Affiliation

Continental federation listings call Guinea's national body the Fédération Guinéenne de Boules et Pétanque. It belongs to the African pétanque structures recognised by the FIPJP. Guinea is reported to have sent delegates to the ordinary general assembly of the Confédération Africaine des Sports Boules (CASB), held on 27 August 2022 at the confederation's headquarters in Cotonou, Benin. We could not independently confirm the current president or founding date of Guinea's federation, so this profile states neither.

African governance has been contested in recent years. In January 2025, 18 African federations met in Dakar and set up a new body, the Confédération Africaine de Sport Pétanque (CASP). On 23 February 2025 the FIPJP executive committee recognised the CASP and withdrew its recognition of the CASB. The CASB appealed. On 21 May 2026, the Court of Arbitration for Sport annulled the withdrawal and ruled that the CASB regains its status as an FIPJP continental confederation, without that reinstatement excluding the CASP from the FIPJP. The court also ruled that this does not exclude the CASP from the FIPJP. We could not confirm which of the two bodies Guinea's federation is aligned with.

African Championships

Yaoundé 2011. Guinea played at the 3rd African Nations Cup, held in Yaoundé, Cameroon, in June 2011. Madagascar won the triples title there. Guinea did not reach the main podium. It played in the final of the consolation series and lost 13-5 to Benin, and winning that final earned Benin a place at the 2012 World Championship in Marseille. We found no evidence that Guinea itself played at the 2012 World Championship.

Ouagadougou 2021. Guinea was one of 16 nations at the 8th African Nations Championship, held 5-7 November 2021 in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. The event was a qualifier for the 2022 World Championship in Benin. The other nations were Algeria, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, the Comoros, Côte d'Ivoire, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Niger, Senegal, Togo and Tunisia. Morocco won the title. We could not find a published result for Guinea.

2026 West African Championship: Doubles Title

Guinea won its best documented international result in May 2026 at the Championnat d'Afrique de l'Ouest de Pétanque (West African Championship) in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, held at the Al Zahraa sports complex in the Marcory commune from 21 to 24 May 2026 - an event some outlets also labelled the "Zone 2" or "Zone 3" championship. Guinea's pair beat hosts Côte d'Ivoire in the doubles final to win gold, and Benin won the triples, beating Côte d'Ivoire 13-2 in the final - a result confirmed in the Ivorian state news agency's own report (AIP, 25 May 2026). That AIP account, however, gives no doubles final score and does not name an individual-event opponent or score, so the specific 13-6 doubles score and the Côte d'Ivoire singles result reported elsewhere (Salif Kourouma beating a Beninese finalist 13-10) are not independently confirmed here, and the full field of participating nations - commonly reported as Guinea, Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Mali, Niger and Senegal - was not confirmed by AIP beyond Benin and Côte d'Ivoire itself.

Domestic Championship: The 2024 National Final

The final of Guinea's 2024 Championnat de Boules et Pétanque was played on the afternoon of 29 December 2024 at the Russal stadium in Tombo, Kaloum, Conakry. Guinea's then Minister of Youth and Sports, Keamou Bogola Haba, attended it as one of several season-ending finals he visited that day, and he used the occasion to call for unity in sport. The ministry gave these results:

• Gold: the triple of Baba Conté, Djiba Camara and Alseny Sylla Bongo
• Silver: a triple representing the Beninese community in Guinea ("Ressortissants Béninois en Guinée")
• Bronze: the triple of Abass Sylla, Mohamed Puspa Camara and Bankal

Clubs & Where to Play

We could not find a public directory of pétanque clubs or boulodromes in Guinea. The 2024 national final in Tombo is the only domestic pétanque venue confirmed in official reporting. This section will be expanded if club and venue details are published.
