Pétanque in Togo

Togo is a growing pétanque nation in West Africa, home to a national federation that has hosted a continental championship, produced a world-medal-winning precision shooter, and built a grassroots club network stretching well beyond the capital, Lomé.

History

The Fédération Togolaise de Sport Boule (FTSB) governs pétanque nationally. Edem Bonou led the federation from April 2018, overseeing a period of renewed international activity that included Togo hosting a major continental championship in 2019. In June 2022, Dominique Gnazo was unanimously elected to succeed Bonou as FTSB president for a four-year term.

African Championships

Togo hosted the 7th African Pétanque Championship in Lomé from 13-16 June 2019, an event that drew ten African national teams to a specially prepared venue in the capital. The Togolese men's team reached the quadrettes final as host nation, finishing runner-up after a 13-9 defeat to Tunisia. Togo also competed at the 8th African Championship, held in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, from 5-7 November 2021, part of a 16-nation field competing for qualification places at the following World Championship.

World Championship Bronze

At the 50th World Pétanque Championships in Cotonou, Benin (September 2023), an eight-athlete Togolese delegation competed across the tournament's disciplines. Togo's shooter reached the podium in the precision-shooting (tir de précision) event, taking the bronze medal, one of the strongest individual results by a Togolese pétanque athlete on the world stage to date.

The Togolese Pétanque Scene

The FTSB oversees an estimated 1,500 pétanque practitioners nationally, organized across roughly fifty clubs and six regional leagues. The northern city of Kara is one of the sport's organized regional hubs, with its own dedicated pétanque league led by a secretary general responsible for local competitions and club development. The federation has also used veteran-recognition events to honor long-serving Togolese players and administrators who helped build the sport domestically.

Visitors to Lomé and other Togolese cities can find organized pétanque through FTSB-affiliated regional leagues, with club activity concentrated around the capital and the northern Kara region.
