Pétanque in Serbia

Pétanque in Serbia is organized as one of two disciplines - alongside bocce volo - under the Боћарски савез Србије (Bocce Federation of Serbia), a Belgrade-based umbrella federation with member clubs concentrated in and around the capital, plus a northern cluster near Novi Sad and Sombor. The federation runs an annual national Petanque League and state championships in singles, pairs, and triples.

History

The federation's roots trace to the Bocce Federation of Belgrade, established on 4 June 1989, which was reorganized into the national Bocce Federation of Serbia on 12 April 1992, with Savo Bjelobrk elected as its first president - one of the people most credited with establishing organized sport bocce clubs in the country. Bjelobrk's role is still reflected in the federation's club roster today: one of Belgrade's bocce clubs carries his name. The federation is registered with the international body, the Fédération Internationale de Pétanque et Jeu Provençal (FIPJP), which holds its own record for the Serbian federation at the same Zemun address the federation uses today - though that FIPJP record lists Milan Mileusnić as president, while the federation's own website currently names Snežana Milesunić as president (with Dejan Kovačević as vice-president), so the FIPJP record should be treated as an earlier snapshot rather than necessarily reflecting the current leadership. Leonid Babić is listed as the federation's commissioner for petanque competitions specifically.

Major Tournaments

• Petanque League (Петанк Лига): The federation's annual domestic team competition, run as a regular season followed by a Final 4 playoff among the top finishers. In the 2026 season, six clubs competed, with SBU Partizan Petanque (8 wins from 10 matches) leading PK Štrand (6 wins from 9 matches) heading into the playoff stage.
• State Championship (Државно првенство): Serbia's national individual and team titles, contested in singles, pairs, and triples formats. At the 2025 edition, Aleksandar Despotović (SBU Partizan Petanque) won the singles title; Jovica Drljača and Srboljub Stegnjaić (PK Lasta) won the pairs title; and Siniša Ignjatović, Saša Kukarić, and Cvijan Marić (SBU Partizan Petanque) won the triples title.

No independently verified results for a Serbian national team at CEP European Pétanque Championships or FIPJP World Championships were found - the sport in Serbia currently appears to be organized primarily as a domestic club competition rather than one with an established international representative record, at least based on publicly available results.

Clubs

The federation's petanque-specific club directory lists six member clubs: As (Belgrade, Zemun), Banjica (Belgrade, Banjica), Beška (Beška), Lasta (Belgrade), Partizan Petanque (Belgrade), and Štrand (Novi Sad). A wider network of bocce volo clubs - including Vojvodina (Novi Sad), Sombor, Smederevo, and several more Belgrade- and Vojvodina-based clubs - falls under the same federation but competes in the separate bocce discipline rather than petanque.

National Competition Calendar

The Bocce Federation of Serbia publishes an official yearly "Календар такмичења Петанк" (Petanque Competition Calendar) as a downloadable PDF, separate from its general bocce calendar. The 2026 edition lists the following confirmed fixtures.

Domestic 2026 fixtures:

• Петанк лига Србије (Petanque League of Serbia): regular-season rounds run 25-26 April (rounds 1-2) through 4 July (round 10), with the top finishers meeting in a Final 4 on 11 July - matching the six-club, Final 4 playoff structure already described above in Major Tournaments.
• Државни шампионат Србије (State Championship): singles on 3 October, mixed pairs on 4 October, pairs on 10 October, and triples on 11 October - no host venue was specified in the federation's own calendar.
• International tournaments hosted in Serbia: the Novi Sad Open (23-25 January, organizer PK Štrand), the Banjica Open (4 April, organizer BSU Banjica), the Partizan Open (18 July, organizer BSU Partizan Petank), and the 9th International Beška Tournament (4-6 September, organizer PK Beška).

International Calendar

Several of Serbia's domestic and hosted tournaments above are themselves legs of a new regional circuit, the Balkan Pétanque Tour, launched in 2026 and confirmed independently via Bulgarian press coverage of its Albena, Bulgaria leg (Pétanque Fest Varna, 13-17 May, over 200 competitors from 25 countries, with a dedicated Balkan Pétanque Tour stage on 16-17 May) rather than from the Serbian federation's calendar alone. Other circuit stops on Serbia's own calendar include the Petanqeu Dracula Cup in Bucharest, Romania (18-19 April) and the Preveza Petanque Festival in Greece (4-7 June), alongside the Novi Sad Open already listed above.

A note on a stale fixture in the federation's own calendar: Serbia's PDF calendar lists the FIPJP "World Championships Triples Men" as being held 17-20 September 2026 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. That location is out of date: the Malaysian Boules Sports Federation's hosting bid fell through in 2025 after its organizer withdrew for lack of funding, and the event was reassigned to Khon Kaen University in Khon Kaen, Thailand, running 20-24 November 2026 as the 52nd World Pétanque Championship - confirmed directly via FIPJP's own website (fipjp.org) and the Thai organizer's official tournament site, with no mention of Kuala Lumpur remaining on either.
