Pétanque in Austria

Pétanque in Austria is organized nationally by the Österreichischer Pétanque Verband (ÖPV), the Austrian Pétanque Federation, which runs a domestic club league, national championships across multiple disciplines, and fields teams at FIPJP and CEP-organized international competitions.

History

The ÖPV's roots trace back to 1993, with the federation officially founded the following year, in 1994. Since then it has worked to raise awareness of the sport, secure suitable playing venues (terrains), and improve playing standards nationwide. The federation is a member of both the Fédération Internationale de Pétanque et de Jeu Provençal (FIPJP) and the Confédération Européenne de Pétanque (CEP), maintaining regular contact with the wider international pétanque community.

Governance Today

The ÖPV brings together regional federations (Landesverbände) across Austria's states, including Niederösterreich, Oberösterreich, Salzburg, Steiermark, Tirol, Vorarlberg, and Wien. Günter Lins serves as the federation's president (Obmann).

Competitions

Beyond Austrian national championships held across seven disciplines, the ÖPV organizes an annual Bundesliga and 2. Liga (top two domestic club league tiers), the Centrope Cup Austria leg (drawing international participants), and the Pétanque Austria Masters, an invitational for the top 24 players on the Austrian ranking list.

Pro Pétanque Wien, based in the capital, is the league's most successful club, having won the Austrian Bundesliga title in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2008, 2011, and 2017. The 2025 title, decided across rounds at Donaupark (Vienna), Haslach (Oberösterreich), and Rankweil (Vorarlberg), instead went to Pétanque SV Freistadt (PSV), its first-ever Bundesliga championship, finishing seven wins and three losses (170:140, +30 point difference) ahead of runner-up Pétanque Club Wiener Trilogie and third-placed Wiener Sport-Club. The 2026 season, opened at Boulezentrum Poggersdorf, was still underway as of this writing.

The ÖPV also crowns national champions across all seven disciplines each year. Reigning 2025 Österreichische Meisterschaft (ÖM) Triplette champions are Julia Staudinger, Tobias Riepl, and Nikolaus Newerkla, while the 2025 Pétanque Austria Masters invitational was won by "Team Sabine" (Sabine Weitzer, Alexander Paier, and Maris Newerkla), edging out "Team Romana" (Romana Rötzer, Peter Plener, and Istvan Federi) in the final.

National Competition Calendar

The ÖPV publishes its full season fixture list, including an iCal feed for personal calendar apps, on boule.at. The 2026 1. Bundesliga season opened with its first round at Boulezentrum Poggersdorf in Kärnten, followed by further rounds across the domestic top flight and 2. Liga through the summer, alongside the Centrope Cup Austria leg at Illmitz on 7 June 2026 and the invitational Pétanque Austria Masters later in the season. For reference, the 2025 Bundesliga season ran across three weekends: 26-27 April at Donaupark in Vienna, 21-22 June at Haslach in Oberösterreich, and 30-31 August at Rankweil in Vorarlberg.

International Results

Austrian representatives compete regularly at FIPJP and CEP-organized European and World Championships. At the 2022 European Pétanque Championship in 's-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands, Austria's singles men's representative fell to eventual runner-up Poland 6-13 in the round of 16. At the 2024 Women's European Pétanque Championship in Santa Susanna, Spain (11-14 July 2024), Isabella Thill won bronze in the precision-shooting (tir de précision) event after losing in the semi-final to eventual champion Sara Diaz Reyes of Spain - the first medal by an Austrian woman in that discipline.

The Centrope Cup

Austria is one of the founding participants in the Centrope Cup, a recurring Central European pétanque tour open to any player holding a license from a FIPJP-recognized federation. The 2025/26 season spans five legs, one hosted by each of Austria, Czechia, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia, with players from France, Spain, Slovenia, Croatia, and Ukraine also appearing in the combined nation ranking. As of the latest published overall standings, Czechia leads with 335 points, ahead of Poland (147), Hungary (107), and Austria itself in fourth (90), with France, Slovakia, Spain, Slovenia, Croatia, and Ukraine rounding out the table. The Austria leg, held 7 June 2026 at Illmitz, was won by French trio "OLE Petanque" (Jean-Michel Xisto, David Sanchez, and Jean Avedikian); the best-placed Austrian team, ÖPV KT 2 (Maris Newerkla, Jaka Vavti, and Pau Vavti), finished runner-up. Clubs & Where to Play

Vienna hosts the country's strongest concentration of clubs, led by Pro Pétanque Wien alongside Wiener Sport-Club and HAPétanque-Wien. Beyond the capital, active clubs include PSB Salzburg and Union St. Florian near Linz in Oberösterreich, reflecting the sport's spread across the western and central Austrian states.
