Pétanque in Turkey

Pétanque in Turkey is governed by the Türkiye Bocce Bowling ve Dart Federasyonu (TBBDF), the Turkish Bocce, Bowling and Darts Federation, which has run the sport nationally since 2006 and hosted the country's biggest international pétanque event to date, the 2007 Women's European Championship in Ankara. Turkey now stages a full national championship program each year and sends teams to compete for a spot at FIPJP and CEP international events.

History and Governance

TBBDF was established by a Turkish sports-ministry committee decision on 18 October 2004, with Ahmet Recep Tekcan elected its first president on 24 March 2005. The federation gained autonomous status under Turkish law on 22 January 2006, and at its first general assembly following that change, on 27 May 2006, delegates voted unanimously to bring pétanque (petank) and boules/volo under the federation's umbrella alongside its founding sports of bocce, bowling, and darts. Leadership passed to Prof. Dr. Mutlu Türkmen, who in turn handed duties to vice president Ayhan Tuğlu on 2 September 2024 ahead of a separate candidacy for the Turkish University Sports Federation presidency. At TBBDF's 6th General Assembly on 1 November 2024, Dr. E. Özgür Bayazıtlı was elected the federation's new president, running unopposed and winning with the votes of all delegates present (correction, 2026-10-08: an earlier version of this article cited a specific "94 of 95 votes" tally; TBBDF's own announcement states only that he was elected unanimously by attending delegates, with no numeric vote count given anywhere, so the specific figure has been removed as unsupported).

A note on disciplines: TBBDF is a multi-sport federation, and at events like the World Games and Mediterranean Games, pétanque, raffa, and volo are grouped together internationally under the umbrella sport "Bocce" - the same arrangement documented on this site for Italy, where the national federation likewise runs pétanque as one of several distinct boules disciplines. Domestically, however, TBBDF organizes pétanque as its own discipline with a dedicated national championship, separate from bocce, raffa, and volo competitions.

Federation Contact

TBBDF's headquarters, per its own website, is at Korkut Reis Mah. Necatibey Cad. No:8 Kapalıçarşı, Daire 132-139, 06420 Çankaya, Ankara, reachable at +90 312 310 20 60. As a multi-sport federation, this office handles all of TBBDF's disciplines rather than a petanque-specific contact point.

International Results

Turkey's clearest moment on the international pétanque stage came as a host: Ankara staged the 4th Women's European Pétanque Championship (Triplette) in 2007, a Confédération Européenne de Pétanque (CEP) event, with Sweden (Lotta Larsson, Jessica Johansson, Lotta Bromér, and Sara Lindelöf) taking gold ahead of the Czech Republic in silver, while the Netherlands and Italy shared bronze (correction, 2026-10-08: an earlier version of this article misidentified this as a Youth event and omitted Italy's shared bronze; per Wikipedia's European Pétanque Championships medal table, Youth editions are held only in even years, so a 2007 Youth event could not have taken place, and this was in fact the Women's Triplette championship, with the Netherlands and Italy both credited bronze). Turkish squads have continued to enter CEP competition since, most recently sending a team to the 2026 European Pétanque Championship in Lorca, Murcia, Spain (18-21 June), though a detailed result for the Turkish delegation remains unavailable - no Turkish name appears among the medalists CEP has published for that edition, and no Turkish federation or press report of the delegation's participation could be found.

Turkey's pétanque team also competed at the 2026 Mediterranean Games in Taranto, Italy (petanque held 22-25 August at Montemesola Sports Hall): the women's pairs of Dilçin Oğuz and Mizgin Morkoyun won their semifinal 10-7 against France before losing the bronze-medal match to Tunisia, finishing 4th without a medal. Turkey's combined "Bocce" delegation (which groups petanque with raffa and volo for these Games) won two medals overall, but both came in other disciplines - a women's volo silver and a men's raffa singles bronze - not in petanque. At the European Youth and U23 Teams Championship in Loutraki, Greece (3-6 October 2026), Turkey's results were considerably stronger: three golds and one silver, including gold in young women's traditional triples for Seda Nur Öksüz, Yağmur Tosun, and Ayşenur Nazlı Korkmaz (beating Spain in the final), golds in the U23 men's and women's golden point events for Kamil Yalçın and Selamet Keşli respectively, and a silver for Öksüz in the young women's golden point event.

The following week, at the European Women's Championship, also in Loutraki, Greece (8-11 October 2026), Turkey added one gold and one bronze, per TBBDF's own announcement. Yağmur Tosun - who had already taken bronze at the 2025 World Women's Championship in France - won gold in the women's golden point (precision shooting) event, scoring 45 points in qualifying. The women's traditional teams squad of Tosun, Seda Nur Öksüz, Ayşenur Nazlı Korkmaz, and Aylin Akkuş, coached by Gökhan Bozdemir, added a bronze medal.

Domestic Competition

TBBDF's flagship domestic event is the Türkiye Petank Şampiyonası, held annually across youth, junior (ümit), and senior categories. The 2025 edition ran 24-28 September at the Akyaka Petanque Courts in Ula, Muğla province, drawing 478 athletes. In the senior women's triples category, the team of Meryem Nilay Özcan, Sevde Naz Ünal, Şevval Köseoğlu, and Ayşegül Gürel took the title. Ahead of the 2026 international season, TBBDF held national team selection trials for both the European Pétanque Championship and the pétanque event at the 2026 Mediterranean Games (Taranto, Italy) at its Mersin Toroslar facility from 23-26 April 2026.

Where the Sport Is Played

Organized pétanque activity in Turkey centers on the federation's own training facilities, including the Mersin Toroslar complex used for national team trials, and on tournament host venues such as the Akyaka Petanque Courts in Muğla province. As with many of TBBDF's boules disciplines, participation is coordinated top-down through the federation's regional structures rather than through a long-established network of independent clubs.

National Competition Calendar

TBBDF publishes a single combined "Faaliyet Programı" (Activity Program) each year covering all of its disciplines - bocce (raffa, volo, pétanque, and çim topu/lawn bowls), bowling, dart, and boccia - rather than a pétanque-only calendar. The entries below are the pétanque-specific and pétanque-inclusive fixtures pulled from TBBDF's own published 2026 program.

Domestic 2026 fixtures:

  • Yeşilay Türkiye Minikler-Yıldızlar Petank Şampiyonası (Turkey Petanque Championship, Mini and Star youth categories, sponsored by the Yeşilay/Turkish Green Crescent anti-addiction foundation), 9-12 April 2026, Antalya-Kemer - TBBDF's flagship youth-only national pétanque championship.
  • Türkiye Okullararası Bocce (Petank-Volo) Şampiyonası (Turkey Interscholastic Bocce Championship, combining pétanque and volo events): group stage 5-8 May 2026 (Mini/Star categories) and 9-11 May 2026 (Youth/Gençler categories) across Erzurum, Hakkari, Karaman, Kırıkkale, Kocaeli, and Manisa provinces; finals for both age groups follow in Bursa, 2-5 June (Mini/Star) and 6-8 June (Youth).
  • 17. Uluslararası Kemer (Raffa-Volo-Petank) Turnuvası (17th International Kemer Tournament, combining raffa, volo, and pétanque events), 28 October-2 November 2026, Antalya-Kemer.

TBBDF's 2026 program does not list a confirmed date for the federation's flagship senior national championship, the Türkiye Petank Şampiyonası (478 athletes at Akyaka, Muğla in 2025 - see Domestic Competition above); it was still pending as of this profile's last update.

International Calendar

Beyond the European Singles and Doubles Championship in Lorca, Spain and the Mediterranean Games selection trials already covered above, TBBDF's 2026 program lists these further pétanque fixtures on Turkey's international calendar:

  • World Youth Pétanque Championship, 30 July-2 August 2026, Santa Susanna, Spain - independently confirmed via FIPJP's own event page. Turkey sent Ömer Ceylan, Yağmur Tosun, Sıla Tunç, and Ali Kaan Erol; the squad reached the precision-shooting quarterfinals before losing 20-15 to Madagascar, without a medal.
  • Men's Triples World Championship, per TBBDF's own listing held in Thailand in November 2026 - see this site's World Championship preview for the confirmed 20-24 November dates at Khon Kaen University, which now match TBBDF's own internal program exactly (this profile previously flagged an apparent one-day mismatch against FIPJP's official international calendar; that calendar has since been re-verified as also stating 20-24 November, so the two sources agree and no discrepancy remains).
  • European Espoirs and Youth Teams Championship (3-6 October 2026, Loutraki) and European Women's Championship (8-11 October 2026) - both hosted by Greece; see that country's profile for venue detail. Turkey's results from both events (three golds and one silver at the Youth/U23 event, plus one gold and one bronze at the Women's Championship) are covered in International Results above.

A note on cross-checking TBBDF's calendar: TBBDF's program also lists a "Genç Kızlar U18/U23 Dünya Kupası" (Women's U18/U23 World Cup) on 27 February-1 March 2026 at Saint-Vulbas, France, under its combined "Bocce international activities" heading. That event does not appear on FIPJP's own published calendar, but a "Coupe du Monde Féminine 'Jeannot Vedrine' U18/U23" at the same venue and dates does appear on the raffa/volo-governing Fédération Internationale de Boules' (FIB, not FIPJP) 2026 calendar, using raffa/volo-specific event terminology (progressive and precision shooting doubles, no pétanque-specific formats). It has been excluded from the pétanque calendar above as very likely a raffa/volo event that TBBDF's combined "Bocce" listing does not distinguish from pétanque - a reminder that this federation's own umbrella categorization cannot be taken as proof an individual fixture is pétanque-specific without checking the discipline-specific governing body's calendar too.
