Pétanque in San Marino
San Marino, one of Europe's smallest states, runs pétanque as one specialty inside a single national bocce federation, the same governance pattern seen in Italy, Croatia, Chile, Peru, Paraguay, Argentina, Uruguay, and Brazil. The Federazione Sammarinese Sport Bocce (FSSB) is affiliated to the Confederation Europeenne de Petanque (CEP), and its calendar is anchored by an annual international pétanque tournament held at the Bocciodromo Federale in Borgo Maggiore.
History
The FSSB was founded in 1967, and the federation marked its 50th anniversary in December 2017 with an international match against Italy's national bocce federation, at which point it counted four affiliated clubs: Faetano, La Fiorita, Libertas, and Montecerreto. During that anniversary event, FSSB president Maurizio Mularoni and Federazione Italiana Bocce (FIB) president Marco Giunio De Sanctis signed a cooperation agreement, in the presence of San Marino's State Secretary Claudio Podeschi and CONS president Gian Primo Giardi, allowing athletes from either federation to compete freely in the other's domestic competitions, with the exception of events where individual national titles are contested. This founding date and the 2017 anniversary narrative could not be independently re-corroborated via web search as of this update (2026-10-03); it is carried forward from the federation's prior published account rather than freshly confirmed this cycle.
Federation
The FSSB sits within the Comitato Olimpico Nazionale Sammarinese (CONS), San Marino's national Olympic committee, and is based at Via Giorgio Ordelaffi, 100, in Borgo Maggiore (telephone 0549 90 31 22, email fedbocce@omniway.sm). For the 2025-2028 term, the federation's General Assembly reconfirmed Maurizio Mularoni as president, defeating challenger Gian Luigi Giancecchi. The federation's current board, per its own official listing, comprises Vice President and Treasurer Lorena Forcellini, Secretary Eliana Peverani, counselors Pier Marino Paoletti, Alessia Casadei, and Carlo Rossi, and athletes' representative Giuseppe Frisoni. The board has shifted since the January 2025 election, which had named Claudio Gasperoni rather than Peverani as a board member; no announcement explaining this change could be found, so it is noted here without a stated reason. The FSSB should not be confused with the separately governed Federazione Sammarinese Sport Speciali, a distinct body for Special Olympics-style competition that also runs its own bocce program.
Domestic Scene
Pétanque activity is concentrated at the Bocciodromo Federale in Borgo Maggiore, built in 1992 with six indoor lanes for Italian-style bocce alongside four outdoor courts for petanque and raffa. It is home to the federation's flagship annual event, the Trofeo Internazionale di Petanque, organized jointly by the FSSB and the Societa Bocciofila Libertas. The 2026 edition, held 24 May 2026, was the tournament's 24th and drew 36 doublette teams from Italy, France, Switzerland, and San Marino; the pairing of Marro and Musso (of La Caragliese) won the title, beating Bauman and Fabrice of Beridier in the final, with a Swiss pairing, Natale and Patrik, taking third place ahead of Cucchietti and Mille. In the accompanying consolation draw ("Gara B"), Zanasi and Ferrari of Modena won, ahead of Natale and Thierry in second and Rinaudo and Donati of Società Vignolo in third, while the Sammarinese pairing of Carlo Rossi and Gianluigi Giancecchi finished fourth. The 2026 edition also marked the inauguration of a new covered structure over the four petanque courts at the Bocciodromo Federale, built with the support of CONS president Christian Forcellini, allowing year-round play.
Separately, San Marino's bocce federation also runs raffa and volo competitions. The annual Trofeo Libertas reached its 17th edition on 17 May 2026 with 192 athletes; Luca Capeti of Vigasio Villafranca won, beating teammate Giuseppe Zara, ahead of Nicolò Lamberti (Canova Budrio) in third and Quirico Del Gesso (Bocciofila Cattolica) in fourth. New in 2026, the 1st Trofeo Internazionale Montecerreto was hosted by the Montecerreto club at the Bocciodromo Federale on 25-26 July 2026, drawing over 250 athletes from six nations in what organizers called the first event of its kind ever held in San Marino. Saturday's mixed-pairs "Lui-Lei" raffa event was won by Chiara Morano (Osteria Grande, Bologna) and Luca Capeti (Vigasio-Villafranca, Verona); San Marino's own Stella Paoletti and Jacopo Frisoni reached the quarterfinals. Sunday's individual events went to Gianluca Manuelli (Sant'Angelo Montegrillo, Perugia) in the men's draw and, for a second win that weekend, Chiara Morano in the women's draw.
Clubs
The FSSB's four affiliated bocce societies, each of which fields petanque players, are:
- Societa Bocciofila Libertas, based in Borgo Maggiore, the federation's regular co-organizer of the Trofeo Internazionale di Petanque and other events at the Bocciodromo Federale.
- La Fiorita, a multi-sport club headquartered at Via del Dragone 17 in Montegiardino, better known internationally for its football section but affiliated to the FSSB for bocce and petanque.
- Societa Bocciofila Montecerreto, based in Acquaviva, host of the new Trofeo Internazionale Montecerreto starting in 2026.
- Faetano, based in the castello of Faetano, one of San Marino's nine municipalities.
International Results
We could not independently verify any San Marino national-team result at a FIPJP World Championship or CEP European Championship via web search; this page will be updated if and when a documented result is found. San Marino's most prominent boules result to date instead came at the continental, non-FIPJP Mediterranean Games: at the XX Mediterranean Games in Taranto, Italy, in August 2026, San Marino topped the small-nation field in the raffa discipline, winning two of the four raffa gold medals on offer. Jacopo Frisoni won the men's raffa individual title, beating Croatia's Luka Žure 8-3 in the final, and Frisoni paired with Enrico Dall'Olmo to win the men's raffa doubles, edging Croatia's Duje Pirić and Žure 7-6 in a final decided on the last end. Stella Paoletti and Giada Paoletti added a bronze in women's raffa doubles, beating Tunisia 10-2 in the bronze-medal match. As at the 2017 GSSE below, these were raffa results rather than petanque; San Marino did not medal in the Mediterranean Games' petanque or lyonnaise events, which were won by Italy, France, Spain, and Tunisia.
San Marino has also medaled in boules at the Games of the Small States of Europe (GSSE), a biennial multi-sport event for Europe's smallest states. Boules made its GSSE debut on 30-31 May 2017 at the Bocciodromo Federale in Borgo Maggiore, when San Marino hosted the Games; San Marino finished second in the boules medal table with 2 gold and 1 silver, all in the raffa discipline rather than petanque - Enrico Dall'Olmo won men's raffa singles, and Dall'Olmo paired with Jacopo Frisoni to win men's raffa doubles, with Frisoni also taking singles silver. That same 2017 program's petanque events were won by other nations (Monaco's Cincinnato Martire in men's singles, Luxembourg in men's doubles and women's singles), and San Marino did not medal in boules, including petanque, when the sport returned at the 2019 Games in Budva, Montenegro. Boules was not part of the sports program at the 2023 Games in Malta, nor was it part of the 14-sport program at the 2025 Games in Andorra, meaning San Marino's last boules or petanque appearance at the GSSE remains 2017. The next Games, in 2027, will be hosted by Monaco (17-22 May) with boules confirmed on the sports program alongside athletics, judo, shooting, and other disciplines; the exact split between petanque, raffa, and lyonnaise events has not yet been published, so it is not yet known whether San Marino will have a petanque-specific opportunity there.
