Five World Titles Across a Decade and a Half

Didier Choupay is one of French petanque's most decorated shooters, with five Men's Triplette World Championship gold medals won over a fourteen-year span - a run matched by very few players in the sport's history. According to accounts in the French petanque press, he took up the game around age 17 after a motorcycle accident left him with injuries, on a doctor's recommendation that it would aid his recovery. Whatever its exact origin, the sport quickly became a career: Choupay built his game as a specialist tireur, the player responsible for precision strikes that dislodge an opponent's boules, and rose through Seine-et-Marne clubs before becoming a fixture of France's national triplette squads through the late 1980s and 1990s.

World Championship Gold, Five Times Over

Choupay's international breakthrough came at the 1985 World Championship in Casablanca, Morocco, where he won gold alongside Alain Bideau and Patrick Lopeze. He returned to the top of the podium at the 1988 World Championship in Genoa, Italy, and again at the 1989 World Championship in Pineda de Mar, Spain - both times partnering Christian Fazzino and Daniel Voisin. The 1989 season also brought a World Games gold medal in Triplette.

His fourth title came at the 1994 World Championship in Clermont-Ferrand, France, again with Bideau, this time alongside Michel Loy. His fifth and final world title arrived at the 1998 World Championship in Maspalomas, Spain, where he partnered Michel Briand, Christian Fazzino and Philippe Quintais to beat Morocco in the final.

French Champion, Three Times

Choupay also won the French Triplette Championship three times domestically: in 1985 at Le Bourget with Bideau and Lopeze, the same year as his first world title; in 1994 at Angoulême with Bideau and Marc Chagot; and in 1996 at Vichy with Michel Loy and Patrick Milcos.

Club Career

Choupay's club career began at Claye Souilly in Seine-et-Marne in 1982, before moves to Conches (1983-1984), Pétanque Briarde (1985-1991) and Star Master's Pétanque Club de Barbizon (1992-2013) - all within the same department. From 2014 he represented L'Académie des Petits Bouchons in Itteville, Essonne.

From Player to National Coach

After his playing career, Choupay moved into coaching at the international level. From January 2022, he served as head coach of Switzerland's national petanque teams, a role he held through at least the 2024 European Championships before stepping down after roughly four years in the post.

2026: Sporting Director of Collectif France

In December 2025, the FFPJP named Choupay sporting director of the men's senior Collectif France for the 2026 season, working alongside Philippe Quintais, who was given the equivalent role for the women's program. Announcing the appointment, Choupay said he wanted to build "sustainable high-performance dynamics" built on cohesion and communication within the squad, with the stated goal of France pursuing gold "in every competition." His remit includes preparing the trimmed seven-player men's Collectif - Yohan Cousin, Mickaël Bonetto, Dylan Rocher, Henri Lacroix, Jean Feltain, Christophe Sarrio and Ludovic Montoro - for the 2026 World Championship in Khon Kaen, Thailand, after the event's original host, Malaysia, withdrew earlier in the year.

Playing Style

Choupay played as a tireur (shooter), the specialist role built around precision strikes rather than pointing. His five World Championship titles, spread across three different partnership combinations, reflect a career built on adaptability as much as raw shooting ability - a trait that has carried into his second career directing national programs.
